Me again! I was going to include a stop in Hong Kong and LA on my way to and from Australia, but now i think i might like to steer myself away from the USA entirely and do a stop-over in the Far East in both directions of my trip. I know i definately want to do Bangkok, but i can't decide between Hong Kong or Singapore. Does anyone have any views and/or advice?

Oh difficult one! I always like the idea of Singapore due to its history and also I have a family connection with Singapore going back to WW2. HK has Disneyland and also would love to see the island as it looks so interesting. Difficult choice, I don't suppose that has helped you much though!

Well, I'm going to be as helpful as Claire!!

Both are amazing!! I loved Singapore and before Disney opened it's gates in Hong Kong I would have plumped to go there, however, now Disney is there (or very soon will be!) I'm not so sure.

There is loads to do in Singapore and like Claire says it's very interesting. I loved our trip to Singapore Island, the museum and gardens there were wonderful - we took a cable car across and that was a fun trip. The zoo in Singapore was lovely and I loved the general atmosphere of the country.

I wouldn't say there is quite so much to do in Hong Kong although it is fascinating (I did go before Chinese rule took over so I'm not sure if much has changed since then). We stayed on Hong Kong Island and took at trip to the territories out of Kowloon and you so see a completely different way of life, which, I found, wasn't quite so different in Singapore.

Not much help at all I'm afraid!! Have fun choosing! :wink BTW I loved Bangkok too - my favourite of three - I'm very envious of your trip!

Well, I was born in Singapore (Dad was in the Navy) but left when I was 6 months old. Went back for the first time 3 years ago and loved the place!

The airport was pristine, clean and appeared deserted! The city itself is the same, with little crime. The people are so firendly and love the English. We stayed in the Shrangli-La, near Orchard Road (the main shopping district of Singapore - 5 minutes away from a mile of top shops and malls, including an M&S and Man Utd. Cafe!) and the people just couldn't do enough for me, asking what football team I support, offering to book me tea at Raffles (a must) and offering me transport to my house where I lived as a baby (my mum had the address, but wasn't sure how to get there, so the hotel offered my my own driver for 5 hours to take me on a private tour of Singapore via my old house all for £30 - a real bargain!)

Raffles was lovely with the high tea, scones and sandwiches in old colonial style English. Sentosa Island was good, the night zoo was interesting and different, the river boat cruise was great and the city centre coach tour we also booked was just brilliant too. Food was well catered for, for all tastes, prices were really cheap, the Singapore Sling was tasty and we are looking forward to going back for uor 10th wedding/40th birthdays in 2008.

Off to HK this year on way to OZ/NZ so will be interesting to be able to compare and contrast the two. Looking forward to it, but of course my heart always belongs to Singapore!

We went to both places this year, Loved them both! But I would go back to Hong Kong.
Hong Kong has loads to do and see, Victoria peak & peak tram, markets, Ferry across the harbour, eating, shopping, train out/ferry back to Lantau Island to see the big Buddah, sail on a junk in the harbour.
The central mid level escalators!, Stanley, Jumbo floating restaurant, happy valley race track, numerous temples (Mo Man Temple was lovely. Sunday Kung Fo Corner in Kowloon Park.
Singapore was also good but we found less to see and do.
Both places were safe and the people very friendly, even at night we were not worried walking around in either.

Susie - I would recommend getting the Qantas Far East brochure, it's has great info regarding hotel locations and tours. Go to www.qantas.co.uk/holidays

As for money, i'm still waiting for quotes back for my trip, but i'm estimating at least £2k for hotels and flights and then i'm looking to take another £1500 - £2000 spending money to last me for three to four weeks! But if you are only going for five days, you won't need anywhere near that much! *lol*

thanks, nearly had a heart attack when i read about your spends!!! then read on to find you are going for three weeks, we have seen flights with virgin and have priced up a disney hotel, and if the price is per room then it is a good price, but we dont know how much to budget for food, thanks for your advice will look at this brochure, susie

Susie,

We have just booked 5 nights in Hong Kong, flying BA World Traveller Plus (38" leg room).
Staying in 4/5 * hotel - cost £1100 with dial a flight.

Due to flying times we get 5 and a half full days (lwe arrive at 2.45pm and last day we don't need to be at the airport til 10.00pm)

Have no idea about spending money needed but I am guessing £500 should be alright.

:jump: :jump:

edited to say £500 for me (going with sis - no idea how much she'll need!!)

Yes, i was checking up on the exchange rate last night and you currently get 13 Hong Kong dollar for every £1. Put it this way, a ticket to Hong Kong Disney land works out at about £19! You can buy a made to measure suit for 1200 HK dollars, about 80 quid! So it looks very cheap!

Another vote for HK, i found that Singapore had been rather sanitised/cleaned up from what it used to be years ago, HK has loads to do and see.

thanks, sam that sound like a really good deal, the only problems that we are having is finding a hotel room that sleeps four, we had the same problem trying to find a hotel in new york!!, so we might be best to stay in a disney hotel and just travel into hong kong the days we dont go to the parks, thanks for all your advice susie

I think Hong Kong it is then! I've spoken to a few people who have been to both and they've all advised that HK is much better, plus it's got the draw of Disneyland! *lol* I'm now impatiently waiting for Nov/Dec 2006 flights to be released!

I agree. A very difficult call. Singapore shopping is awesome but HK is just as good. Either way Im certain you will enjoy either.
