I went to Alghero, Sardinia for cheapie break 4 nights over May Bank holiday stayed at Florida Hotel. Also went there 2 years ago in Sept and stayed at Hotel Carlos for another short break. We travelled with Ryannair both times for about £60 total. Alghero is about 5km from airport (wasn't aware of any plane noise though)so you can get bus really cheaply but most people take a taxi for about 18 euros. This year we hired car for about £62 from airport. Drove north for about 40 minute drive to Stinto fabulous penisula with strip of white sand and turquoise blue water. Another day we drove south to lace called Bora (I think from memory). The drive was spectacular loads of hair pin bends and fabulous view of coastline - reminded us of drive from San Fran to LA in California except no sea mist. Another day we headed north west.Alghero is really good for short break as there is strip of sandy beach, harbour area and old part of town with cobbled streets and shops - plenty of good restaurants and there is good boat trip to Grotto caves. We didn't hire car 1st time and had plenty to do and soak up sun. Would definitely like to return to island and travel further afield. I gather it is really busy and more expensive in July/August. It is well worth a visit - would go back anytime. Glad to help with any further queries. Anne

Anne. We are due to dock at alghero in a few weeks time. Is the port near the Old Town.
We only have a few hours there and don't really want to go on an organised trip. We thought it would be nice to just take a wander on our own to the Old Town if it is close.
