Yachtsman’s Steakhouse – Dinner
I’ve wanted to try this restaurant for ages, but as a long time vegetarian Paul was understandably reticent.
I’d read so many good reports about the quality of the steak here though, and finally persuaded Paul to give it a go.
I was slightly anxious about how he’d react when we came across the butcher at work at the entrance to the restaurant!!
But Paul managed to hide his horror, and thankfully recognised the opportunity to feed my obsession for food related pics.
The butcher was clearly happy to pose for the vegetarian photographer. LOL
The meat all looked very clean and fresh, and it was helpful to see the different kinds of cuts available on the menu.
As we’d arrived half an hour early for our reservation, we relaxed with a glass of wine in the Crew’s Cup lounge, which is just off to the left of the entrance. It’s a cosy, yacht club style bar with a few booths and about ten tables. I noticed some tasty looking appetizers being served here – we must come back and try them out sometime!
After about twenty minutes, our names were called and we were escorted past the busy chefs, and seated at a table in the middle of the room.
I can be a bit oversensitive to loud noise and was worried that I’d be troubled by the volume here as there are wooden floors and high ceilings, but it wasn’t at all noisy.
We were soon perusing the menu, aided by our enthusiastic and discerning server, John. He’s worked here since the restaurant first opened and was a veritable font of wisdom.
We ordered a bottle of Napa Valley Merlot and feasted on the warm, onion bread rolls with butter and roasted garlic. The rolls were gorgeous and it was very difficult to refrain from eating the lot - actually I don’t think Paul did refrain, `cos I swear I only had one, and there were barely a few small crumbs left in the basket!
For his main course Paul had Potato and Spring Garlic Ravioli which came with a delicately smoked tomato fondue. It was topped with sautéed spinach and a swirl of goat’s cheese cream. He enjoyed it greatly, his one teensy criticism being that he would have preferred the filling to have had a little more punch.
I had the 12oz Charred Bourbon Strip Steak which was cooked to perfection. The quality of the meat was exceptional. It was tender, succulent and full of flavour.
John recommended that I have the horseradish mashed potatoes which really were incredibly good.
Unusually for me, I was in a mushroom mood tonight so ordered what turned out to be an enormous serving of sautéed mushrooms doused in sherry and cabernet sauce. They were lovely but I couldn’t manage to eat even half of them. Especially as tonight, I was determined to leave room for dessert!
There was a wonderful array of tempting treats on display and we found it far too hard to choose just one, so we shared the dessert sampler platter.
There was Jack Daniel’s Chocolate Mousse Cake, White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Pie, Crème Brulee, Key Lime Pie and Strawberry Sorbet in a chocolate cup.
We were both hard pushed to find a favourite among them – they were all outstanding! Absolutely delicious!
We had a fabulous evening with great food and impressive, professional service. I’d return to the YS in a heartbeat.
Maybe I can tempt Paul back to this carnivore’s paradise with the promise that he can have a dessert sampler platter all to himself next time!
