Shopping and tax

How does the tax system work over there when shopping? When you buy more than one item, are you taxed for every item or the total bill. What is the tax amount there?

Tax is currently between 6.5-7%. It's of the total bill I think - assume it is as it's always at the bottom of the receipt and not after each item.

I have to say I wish they used our system and put prices inc tax on the stickers :(
