Hi,
Once we upgrade to the new DIBB, the current 'Private Message' system will become 'Personal Message' system. Essentially they are exactly the same, so why the change in name?
Well we have been accused in the past by a couple of small minded individuals of reading your private messages!
I would like you to take note of the following.
Q. Is it possible for the Moderators to read your Private Messages?
A. No, it is not possible for the moderators to read your private messages apart from the ones you actually send to them!
Q. Is it possible that Administrators can read your private messages?
A. Yes, it is possible for Admin’s to read your private messages.
Q. Do Admin’s read the Private messages?
A. NO, we do not read Private Messages even though it is possible to do so. The small minded individuals may not believe this, but then I don't care, they can believe what they want.
ALL data on this site including PM's are stored in a database on the server, as such anyone who can directly access that database has access to everything stored in it and this includes your PM's. ONLY SMAX and myself have this access.
Many people are under the impression that what they do on the internet is 'Private', it may come as a shock to you that it isn't. When you type something it has to be processed and stored, anyone who has access to that storage system will have access to what you typed.
This includes emails that you send through your normal ISP's email system. The admin staff at those ISP's do have access to your data. I very much doubt that they would bother reading messages though as it would just take too long and be totally pointless.
To this end and to avoid future confusion and privacy issues I am altering the DIBB's Privacy Policy.
You can read a copy of the new policy once we have upgraded.
We are changing the word 'Private' to 'Personal' as private give the indication that your messages are in fact private. Now in the normal run of things they are private, but by their very nature can not strictly be classed as 'Private'
Just to summarise,
Administrators that have direct access to the server can if they really wanted to, read your PM's, this is the same for EVERY internet system, website and forums where you enter information. If anyone tells you different then they are lying to you.
If we wanted to read your PM's then we would have to spend time accessing the core database at the server level and trawl through hundreds of message fields that are sent each day. We just don't have the time or the inclination to do this.
We do have the ability to enter words that the system will automatically filter out of PM's and the Forums, so if something gets changed in your PM for example a banned URL it isn't us reading your messages, it's the automatic filter doing what it was designed to do.
Q. Will we ever access the database to read PM's?
A. Yes, we will access the database to read PM's in the event of complaints or abuse of our system.
With the above in mind I would strongly advise that you do not use our PM system to send information that you want to keep totally private.
