View Full Version : renting DVC points?

just wondering how easy this is to do?
we are hoping to go for 3 weeks next time, and although i absolutely loved being onsite i'm not sure i want to do the one room with 2 kids for 3 weeks. We thought about staying one week onsite and 2 weeks in an offsite villa or condo, but if we could stay onsite in a DVC then that would be even better.
I do love the idea of a villa but we went for a drive around and TBH i felt the villa areas were a little isolated and also i worry about the little ones with a villa pool, and the fact that there isnt the shallow areas or any of the slides etc that you get with a resort pool.
We would want a one bed villa, as its the kitchen, lounge area and washing facilities we really need and it would be for late september/early october time in 2007, and we would probably still do a week in a normal hotel room, then move to the DVC.
Also can you get AP discounts on the DVC resorts easily, im thinking we may need to pay for some of the time and rent points for the rest. I did look on the best rate program and they were offering SS and OKW at very good rates for february?
If we do want to rent points when would we need to be starting to ask and look for someone to rent from
thanks and sorry for the long post

P.s buying into DVC ourselves is not possible at this time as we don't have that much capital and can't get finance
Hi Suzanne,
Last week Sept a 1-BR at OKW say would cost 160 points, increasing to 172 points in October, so you would need 320 - 344 points for two weeks. That is a lot of points so in all likelihood you would need to rent points from several different people. It's not impossible but it would not necessarilly be easy - it is easier to rent out points than it is to rent points. The current going rate for renting points appears to be $11 so you would be looking at $3,520 - $3,784.
You could rent points to cover the cheaper Mon-Thurs nights which would reduce the requirement to 80 points p.w. in Sept and 90 points p.w. in Oct. This would reduce your requirement to 160 - 180 points which would be easier to achieve. The cost at $11 a point would reduce to $1,760 - $1,980. You would still need to find accomodation for the Friday and Sat nights but you could do this cash using your AP discount or choose to stay elsewhere either on resort or at say Universal - all of which would be cheaper than paying with rented points.
Cheaper alternatives to staying at DVC would be condos rather than villas (so you would have a comunal pool), or to stay at one of the other non-Disney timeshare resorts such as Marriott Cypress Harbour (which we own at too) near Sea World. At Marriott the location and facilities are great but it is not on-site Disney. You can rent weeks there from other owners far cheaper than DVC accom and get a 2-bed room appartment too. See the rental board on www.tug2.net
I hope this helps.

Thanks for that Hal, another question if you don't mind. If we did a 12 night stay, sun -thurs we would only have 1 weekend to pay for, would it be possible to make one reservation for the whole time and pay for the weekend with cash and the week with points or would we have to have all different ressies. I wouldn't want to have to keep moving resorts or rooms

It would be different reservations HOWEVER you can get central reservations tolink them all together so that you do not have to move.
Regards.

Thanks again, it's all quite complicated but i think it may be worth looking into
Suzanne, what were the discounts you could get on OKW using the AP best rate programme?
Does anyone know if AP discounts are in addition to DVC Owner discounts? - or which is the greater discount? (I am trying to do the maths re whether it is worth getting AP's with the DVC discount vs 14 or 21 day Magic Your Way passes).

The cost wasn't too bad, but it wasn't as preferable as renting points. I think it was $1300 for 7 nights in a studio, so less than the rack rate but still cheaper to rent points. Would be okay for the odd night.
Not sure you would get double discounts having an AP and DVC owner discounts, although the discount you actually get on an AP in the first place might make it worth getting, especially if you plan on going more than once within the year

Thanks. I guess the best option would be one AP for the discounts and the Magic Your Way for everyone else! I would love to go more than once a year but sadly it's not an option.

Isn't it as cheap to get two onsite hotel rooms?

Yes it can be, and that si certainly an option, however to compare for the time of year we are going
2 rooms at a value resort at rack rates will be $160 per night plus tax
12 nights at boardwalk villa in a one bedroomed will cost 250 points, if we rented these at the current rate of $10 per point, which is what most seem to go for then it will cost us $2500 or just over $200 per night, which i know is more but for that you are getting a full kitchen, laundry facilities (which cost me loads on the last trip) a sitting area and a jacuzzi bath, plus you are getting all the facilities of staying at a deluxe resort, and you are onsite. Even with AP rates you couldn't get a standard room at a deluxe especially the epcot area ones for that amount.
For our other nights we will probably stay at a value or moderate or we may rent points for a studio as well.

Suzanne - the studio rooms have free use of the laundry room - just use the room key to gain access - only things to provide are the washing powder and fabric softener.

Do they have a dedicated laundry for the DVC then? i thought you would just have to use the normal coin operated resort one

We have only stayed at Boardwalk. The DVC rooms are to the left side of the reception area whilst the rooms for the general public are to the right of the reception area. There is a dedicated laundry for DVC members. Just from memory, I think it has two washers and three dryers.

If you stay at a dedicated DVC resort the studios laundry are by the quiet pools.
