As long as you have multiregion DVD should work fine.

As lisabl said you need a DVD player which will play region 1 DVD's. If yours does you will be fine - if it doesn't you can buy one quite cheaply.
You can get them in places like Super Target, Walmart and Best Buy (near the Florida mall)

We have bought loads from America both on trips and via ebay as they are usually realeased earlier over there. You just need a multi region DVD player.

Are you sure that it's not just an operator error? I know what you blokes are like.

Some DVD players need to be unlocked first.
By copyright law the have to be locked to various regions in the world (the UK is region 2 and the US is region 1).
Search on google with your model of DVD player and you will usually find an unlock code from the setup menu via the handset to make it region free.
I buy loads of DVDs every time i'm away. DW thinks I run a Blockbuster on the quiet.
