Just bear in mind that Barcelona is nowadays one of the most crime ridden cities in Europe with crimes against tourists being rife.

We stayed at the Hilton in Nov 2004 when we went for 2 days to see Barcelona/Real Madrid.

exellent hotel and away from the busy centre, very close to the Nou Camp.

Can't help there unfortunately. The crime thing in Barcelona has been in the news recently (last couple of weeks) both on telly and in the papers.
Might sound silly but if we go away for a nice romantic interlude we tend to keep it in England and go to somewhere like the Cotswolds where there are loads of really nice olde worlde pubs/inns/hotels with all the gizmos.

We never think of going to Europe these days its either Florida/Caribbean or the Cotswolds. Boring but nice.

Try the Sol Melia group website being solmelia with a .es extention Select English. They have some nice hotels in the centre of Barcelona. For something special book the executive floor. Generally includes a free bar and snacks. Excellent site for booking that spanish holiday. Have a UK free phone number also. Look at the website prices then compare with a mainstream holiday brouchure to a SOL hotel. The price difference is interesting.

We stayed at the Meridien on Las Ramblas. You can't beat the location. The hotel is very nice and the service good. Our room was quite large with a balcony looking onto a side street but you can also get them overlooking the ramblas. The windows were sound proofed which is good as it is quite noisy on the ramblas until late.
We didn't feel unsafe at all in Barcelona. It is just like any large city you do need to be careful and obviously there is crime as there is in any big city like London or Paris. It is a great city for walking - loads to see but not so spread out as to be exhausting. There is also an excellent bus network around the city and surrounding area.

I have been to Barcelona 3 times and have never seen any trouble although I do know people who have been robbed. Just be aware of potential trouble and you should be fine. I don't think it's a scary city.
The last hotel I stayed in was the Catalonia Albonini which was a beautiful old building - if felt like staying in a (slightly faded) Renaissance palace. The location was excellent and it was very reasonably priced, although more 3* than 4*.

I have also been to Barcelona 3 times and have been fortunate enough not to encounter any problems. As with all major cities across the world you should keep your wits about you and avoid any "dodgy" areas, especially at night. The area to the left of Las Ramblas as you come up from the port is one to be avoided... think this is El Raval??? Also, I wouldn't walk around the narrow alleys of the Gothic quarter at night.

The last time I was there I stayed at H10 Universitat, which was very central and just off Placa Catalunya. There are several H10 hotels, most of which are centrally located. Their website is www.h10.es . They serve a fantastic breakfast. ;)

There are tons and tons of hotels around Barcelona. Passieg de Gracia and Rambla Catalunya are good central locations IMHO. Check Tripadvisor as well for "honest" opinions. :spin:
