We have a problem.

We dont think we can hire a car when we are in las vegas because we neither of us will have been driving for a year, (is this true) but we want to see the Grand Canyon.

However we dont just want to go on your usual Day trip. We want to spend the night in a log cabin, and do a helicopter tour. The problem is how do you get there?

The other thing is we also want to view the Canyon 'standing' we want to go to the highest points on the southern or western rim. PLUS we want to and this is probably the most important, go to the new Canyon Skywalk.

I know nothing about the place so any info would be great. Are there buses to get you around the park, such as getting from the south rim to the new skywalk?. Is there a bus you can get to the grand canyon and get back the next day?

At the minute it looks like we will be spending the night at a hotel or cabin on the rim (are there any)? We would love to walk from are hotel to the edge.

You can certainly book the hotel/lodges near the edge, but those with views are in short supply. I would book fairly soon, though it seems you are going at a quieter time so there may be more availability. There is a path running along most of the popular edge of the south rim and many viewpoints - a lovely walk. Busses do run to take you to some of the viewpoints, but may be restricted in winter I think. You can walk down into the Canyon too. The path the mules take is the easiest I think. Just a little walk down makes you appreciate the size of the place! It's worth getting up and watching the mule trip set off, very entertaining.
This is our most favourite place we have been to! In fact you have made me want to go and plan.

Mum and Dad stayed in a lodge on the rim last October - they walked to a viewpoint each morning to see the sun rise and once in the evening to see it set, but it was cloudy. I think they said it was about a 20 - 30 min walk.
If you go down into the bottom you have to stay a night, I think they said, before you come back up.

Can anybody tell me the difference between the south rim and the west rim?

You can certainly get flights from Vegas to the Grand Canyon. We went on an organised day trip but not everyone on the flight was on it and went their own ways on landing. On our return there was only the 3 of us and the pilot.
