I'd appreciate some ideas from all you DIBBers. I'm off to Florida with DW, DS(11) and DS(9) for the first time on 27th March and spending 1 week in Orlando and 1 week in Fort Myers. We've pretty much worked out how we're going to spend the first week but would like to get some ideas for the second week which is planned to be a bit more relaxing.

If anyone has got any suggestions about things to do in the fort Myers area please post them.

Thanks Very Much

You can visit Sanibel & Captiva Islands - out of this world! best beach for shells. You can go on trips out of the Gulf to Dolphin spot etc. I remeber the 1st time I went to Ft Myers I was 15 and saw a group of dolphins swimming in the wild for the 1st time, the memory is still as good 17 years later!.

You are only about 1/2 an hour from Naples and they have good trips to Everglades and there is a Zoo there which did a good up close show of which they bring in the big cats. The Mall at Naples isnt bad and there is also one at Ft Myers although other half didn't let me visit last time.

You'll have a fantastic week to chill and still find things to do.

You will be so tired after your week in Orlando all you will want to do is relax. We used to holiday in Fort Meyers a lot and just lazed around. They have a good beach and it is a touristy place.

Naples and Sarasotta are worth a visit too.

There's plenty to do around this area, if you get tired of the beach.
The winter homes of Thomas Eddison and Henry Ford are in Fort Myers and well worth a visit

Ther's also a place called the Imaginarium (I think!) From what I can recall it's a hands on museum, where you can really get involved, you can see what a hurricane wind feels like, go through a thunderstorm, plenty for you to get involved in.There's also live fish, sharks & turtles.
There's also a Museum

Would also recommend the Edison Ford estate - it's a really interesting few hours. We went back in August and it was a very, very humid day and there's not a lot of aircon there, so March/April will be great. Included in your tour is a trip on Edison's electric water boat - half an hour of a very quiet tour in the bay.

We went to Busch for the day when we were in Fort Myers, but journey time was about 2.5 hours, but well worth it for us since we love BG.

A trip to the Everglades is a must - take an airboat ride, or just drive around some of the swamp areas. there is a very interesting tourist centre, but can't remember exactly where.

Agree that a trip to Sanibel and Captiva will be worth it, if only for the shelling and wildlife. Speaking of wildlife, if you're into this then visit the US version of our RSPB - the National Audubon Society have a center nr Naples which is a 2.5 mile boardwalk. You will see all sorts of creatures in the wild - from gators, to hawks, eagles, bald eagles, raccoons. It's a beautiful place, so quiet and peaceful.

There are loads of eateries around Ft Myers, too. Yum yum.

Enjoy your stay in one of our favourite SW Florida areas :d:
