.. has anyone been to Melbourne and/or Sydney in September? And if so, what is the average temperature? I'm guessing it would be their Spring, so am thinking around high 60s?

Hi,

Haven't been to Melbourne but have been to Sydney twice - once late September and the second time it was early November. Will probably be higher than 60's, it was closer to low 70's if I remember correctly. We were certainly sunbathing on the beach at Bondi anyway!

Thanks Michelle, that is very good news! I'd like to get on Bondi beach for a sunbathe at least once! :cool2:

No probs. I think the climate is a bit cooler in Melbourne so you may need fleeces or whatever. I am sooo jealous I love Australia, especially Sydney. Make sure you climb harbour bridge - an experience not to be missed!

Yep, definately looking to do the Sydney Harbour bridge climb! I'm looking at hotels in that area too, do you mind me asking where you stayed?

Hi,

First time was a backpackers hostel in Bondi, second time I can't remember and I really should be able to as it was my honeymoon!! We stayed in the Darling Harbour area which was really nice as you can catch the ferry across to Circular Quay where all the action is. It was a chain hotel like Holiday Inn or something. Sorry I haven't been much use have I!

Melbourne is a cooler climate - reknown for having '4 seasons in one day'! We went October 3 years ago - 1st day real cold and coat weather, cloudy and overcast. Next day it was shorts and T-shirt weather in 70's. In September it is similar if a little cooler as it is early Spring. Pack a mixture!!

We stayed in the Shangri-La hotel with magnificent harbour/Opera House views from our window. All within easy walking distance of the shops, brdige and Opera House. 2 nice restaurants (we had one when it was the Oz Pop Idol final, and they were filming their last dinner together!), great room, service, location and view.

In Sydney we are looking at either the Holiday Inn Old Sydney or Holiday Inn Darling Harbour, and then moving to the Four Seasons for the last two nights. But may consider the Shangri-La also, i have been looking at that hotel on the net (along with loads of others!). In Melbourne we are considering the Grand Mercure, do you know if this one is any good? We may also go to Cairns for 3 nights too now! :)

As far as Cairns goes, I can highly recommend the Cairns International, Harbourview room. The rooms are spacious, bright and modern with a balcony overlooking the harbour and mountains - perfect for a read of the paper early evening, watching the world go by! Lovely lobby and restaurnats. The 'posh' one we went to on our last night was excellent, where the waiter made our caesar salad starter from fresh at the table, even making the dressing in front of us, as well as the crepe suzette pancakes for dessert. Excellent service, hotel, view and rooms, central to the city centre and all those lovely shops!!

The saying in Melbourne is "if you don't like the weather, wait a minute".

It will change.
