When we left the airport we thought we had enough change between us all. Got to the 1st both no problem we went through the green lane which gives change, 2nd botth the same the 3 rd we approched and it was $.50 none of us had any coins only notes, there were 2 lanes 1 for express or the blur lane exact change. When we approched the was no staff there so we stopped asked the car they said no and the car behind by this time there was a queue building up so we drove through and a alarm and lights started. We havent heard any more to this day so fingers crossed as they say $200 fine

It's happened to us too. Once we didn't have any change like you and once it didn't seem to be working and although we put our money in the light stayed red and the alarm went off. Both incidents were several years ago and we've had no comeback yet. I'm sure they realise it is a hire car and that it's likely to be a confused tourist.

We often wondered how their express pass system could register as the cars drove through so quickly...........

I got in the 'wrong' lane during our trip in 1996 and went through the SunPass lane by mistake - I've been 3 times since then and they haven't 'got' me yet! ;)

I read somewhere that when they check the registration and find it's a hire car they kind of go 'oh it's a tourist again' and let it go!

We went through sun pass by mistake, told lady at next toll booth she told us not to worry about it, lots of visitors do, they don't take it to seriously.

On the way back to Orlando airport I remember my DW throwing our last four quarters into a toll basket and missing!!!!

Ha ha, they let us through anyway!

This happened to us on the 417, no one was there even though it stated there was, we were so worried the next day we went to the court house, they said it was ok, it takes your registration number down, and if you keep going through other booths without paying then you do get fined. Much to our relief, but it is worrying if you dont know.

We found ourselves at that booth with no change too. Luckily for us the driver behind gave us the money. I bet he thought ***** more tourists - better pay to get them out of the way. We didn't know what to do as there is no way to turn around and no staff available.

We had a similar case on our last visit, went through all the manned booths ok but didn't have the right change for the unmanned booth. A very kind local gave us it so we could go through

Same happened to friends of mine, had no change so just drove through(after trying to force dollar bill into slot with no luck) cue the sirens/lights etc this was when they had just arrived for the first time. Then a mile or two down the road they found they had come the wrong way and so had to turn round and go back through aforementioned toll again LOL.:pgig: :pgig: :pgig:

They can track you down but for 50 cents I am not sure they will bother.

Happened to us just after we arrived. Therer we were following directions to get our villa key, driving down the Greenway (which we sort of knew), when we came across an unmanned toll booth asking for 50c. We didn't have anything at all. So we chucked in some English coins and drove through. All the bells and whistles rang (really, really, really loud when you are guilty and fleeing!) but, it being the Greenway (because it's always empty and our favourite road!) there was nobody around. We waited and waited once we returned to the UK, because you have to give an imprint of your credit card and we thought that this would be the crunch. But no. Nothing and that was two years ago, so I guess we were let off!

From the Staff of The Florida State Department of Transport -

"If a visitor, or any motorist, finds themselves at a State Toll Plaza with no money... The toll attendant will issue the motorist a 'non-paid toll receipt' which the motorist has 30 days to mail the owed toll to the accompanying address of the Tallahassee Tolls Office.

If a motorist finds themselves at an unmanned, exact-change only toll Plaza without change, they should pass through the Toll Plaza. The vehicle tag will be recorded as a violation, but it is only following repeat violations that the driver will receive a citation in the mail.

If the motorist intends to use the same route repeatedly, they should prepare to use the toll plaza in the future by having exact change.
Change can be received from any toll attendant at any manned toll plaza."

Tell your Rental Company about any problems you may have had...

We went through an unmanned toll in 1998 and they haven't caught up with us yet!
