We are looking at this one:

www.hongkong.peninsula.com

But not sure if we can afford the whole duration there, so was hoping for some recommendations on more reasonably priced ones so we can stay there for the majority of the trip and then switch to the Peninsula for the last night!

Cheers! :spin:

We stayed at the Kowloon Shangri-La. Great hotel, good location. If you join their Golden Circle club ( free) then you get a discount of 50% off breakfast.
Loved Hong Kong.

We had an absolutley amazing time at the Intercontinental (just down the road from the Pen) with the most fantastic service and magnificent views. We upgraded to a Junior Harbourview Suite room, with a birds eye panoramic view of the whole of the city skyline view - by day and especially by night an awesome sight, with the boats of all shapes and sizes making the M25 look like a country B road!

We were asked to do a half an hour survey of a new room versus old room and were taken upstairs and shown around etc. After we gave our views we were awarded a £200 equivalent of food vouchers of our food and drink. Needless to say we had a slap up meal and wine in their top restaurant that night!

We also had Club facilities which were great. For £30per day for both of us we had a free breakfast, free soft drinks all day, free afternoon tea with scones, sandwiches, cakes and nibbles and a free bar between 5-8pm with wine, champagne etc. and hot and cold snacks (and free internet availability). It was lovely to relax watching the world go buy over a glass of champagne and a fresh clotted cream scone and English Tea!

All in all, highly reccommended with great service, food and room with a view. We will go back again.

Ian - Do you mind me asking how much the rates were at the Intercontinental? We are also looking at the Langham Palace as a possibility!

we went to hong kong as part of our honeymoon 9 years ag o now !! cant remember what hotel we stayed in but it was lovely. it felt very strange to go to the swimming pool and find it outside on about the 10th floor. hong kong is fantastic ,very humid , make sure you take the star ferry over and go to a market at night.also go on the floating retsaurant it is absolutely out of this world, to this day we regret not having the crispy duck but a whole one seemed to much for just the 2 of us.we also went shopping 9 cant remember where sorry) but mens chino like trousers were about £3 a pair. we bought some fantastic pictures that are still in our hall and we have lots of comments about them .kids clothes are fantastic and so cheap also bought some material for curtains very unusual. we also went up a cable car thing and it had great views over the harbour etc.
have a great time its such a great place a holiday i will never forget.

Stanley market is the place for great bargains it's on Hong Kong Island, also Nathan Street night market was good. The Jumbo floating restaurant is stunning, me and my frend got 'caught' pinching wrapped chopsticks off an empty table and the waiter brought us several packets then for souvenirs.

Not at all... funnily enough was just about to file the old holiday stuff away and have invoice in front of me...don't think it will be cheap.....er...no!! For 3 nights at the Intercontinental, Junior Suite, Deluxe HarbourView room (including Jaccuzzi) was £846 in total. Yup, seems alot, but when paying over £10k for the overall package I didn't want to skimp on the first leg, so in the grand scheme of things it was worth it, and I would do it again! You can get cheaper rooms and rates and I would still recommend the hotel to stay in even if you didn't want to splash out and treat yourselves.

Check this linkhttp://agent.travel2.com/travel2pdf_public/2006/fareast/fareast_2006_hongkong.pdf out for details of this and other hotels from Travel2, a company I have used in past and would again recommend.

Cheers.

Thanks for all your advice, everyone! :) My friend has offered to pay for the hotel in Hong Kong so we are staying at the Peninsula for the duration of the trip. As we are only going to be there 2 and a bit days, what are the total, can't miss, 'must-sees?'

Disney obviously!! 3/4 hour there (and back) lovely clean and efficient underground and a great Disney day to be had. Check my review. We were there for 3 days so we also did shopping across the main Island via the Star Ferries (a whopping 15pence or something!!) to the large malls within walking distance of the ferry terminal. We also did a night time ferry (OK, wouldn't do it again) and a day sight seeing trip to include Stanley Market, Victoria Peak, Repulse Bay, the main highlights. We also just wandered around - the Pen is on a busy thoroughfare, 5 minutes from the Ferry and there is another big mall right outside too.

Have fun.

Yeah, i've already told my friend we are going Disney! *lol* But, as she's paying, if there's something else she wants to do more, i'll go with it! Victoria Peak is on my list of 'to do' places, and i'm definately into doing some serious shopping!

How long were you originally going to spend in HK? You were originally only talking about The Peninsula for your last night, but now you're only there for 2 nights in total anyway?

The Peak is a must for any trip to HK, and you have to do the Star Ferry even if you have no need to cross the harbour. Ideally you'll do a day and night crossing.

Aberdeen Harbour for the floating restaurants is worth a look and the night markets around Kowloon are great fun also.

Worked in HK for a time and love it. Thinking about a trip to Oz for the Ashes this Winter and will make sure I stop over at HK for at least 3 or 4 nights en route.

We were originally looking at 4-5 days, but work commitments have meant that i've had to scale that down so now will only be there Mon night, and Tue & Weds day/night, flying back to the UK early morning on the Thursday.

Not sure why I didn't mention this - whether you are a gambler/horse lover or not - get to Happy Valley for a race meeting if there is one on whilst you're there. It's an incredible experience.

The Peninsula is famous for its fleet of white Rolls Royce's. You should enquire as a special treat how much a transfer from the Airport would be.

Another one to add, having seen your post on TripAdvisor.

The R66 site should be here:

http://www.r66.com.hk/main.html

but is down at the moment. Only temporarily, I hope.

R66 is situated on the 62nd floor of the Hopewell Centre. People assume it's on the 66th floor, because of the name, but that relates to the fact that it takes 66 minutes to make one complete revolution.

I was lucky when working in HK as my office was in the Hopewell Centre so R66 was a couple of short lift rides away at the end of the day for a few relaxing drinks with absolutely stunning views. But I wouldn't eat there - the food is not all that (and neither was the cabaret singer when I was there!) but it is well worth a visit for the view alone. As you rotate from the 'dark side' of The Peak to the dazzling harbour view, it will really take your breath away.

Thanks, Bozza. The link is working now, i've just had a quick look at it. Maybe i will reconsider eating there and just go for the drinks. Definately want to visit tho just for the views! Where is it in relation to the Peninsula?

Bozza

The Peninsula is on Kowloon, so you'll need to get back over onto the Island and then along to Wan Chai, where the Hopewell Centre is.
