 hi everyone
we have heard that old town has not got such a good rating this year could
anyone let us know if this is right.Because we used to love going there for
the car parade.
:thumbs-up :wavey:
hi
it is awful now, tacky beyond belief and full of undesirable looking characters.:( i remember when it first opened way back in the early 1980's there was a wonderful british cafe which had a section for children where they could sit in a bus, or a booth with bars like a gaol. my son used to love it there, so did we. sheperds pie and beans made a lovely change. no i don't expect to have "food like mum makes" when i'm on holiday. unfortunately i eat any thing and every thing:grin:

We went last October for the saturday car show and to be honest we didn't notice any difference - i think it depends on what time of the night you go there. We go early evening and never stay too late.
Since we first started going here in 1994 we have noticed a difference there though - mainly in the fact that there is a lot more bars there than there used to be thus making it seem a bit more shabby if thats the right word to use.
It is part of the tradition of our hols to go for a wander round on a saturday evening look at the cars, go to the leather shop and a couple of others then have a scrummie checkers on the way back to the car.

I agree with Alison on this one, it's become a tradition for us to visit old town for the car parade.
We also usually have a visit there during the day when it's less busy, I also agree that it's 'not as good as it used to be' and we also never stay there too late, and are normally away by 9:30 - 10pm.
Having said that there always seems to be quite few Brits around, I would get there reasonably early though as the car park seems to fill up fairly quickly.
And on the subject of the car park I wish it was better lit !

Must say didn't notice too much difference but we did park in an area which i do have to admit did not appear to be too desirable. It was in the car park of the hotel to the right of old town (possibly a 'Days Inn') - we shouldn't have parked there really but never-the-less it was pretty grim at the time we were there :( :omg: :(

Old Town is nowhere near as good as it used to be. When it first opened it was great with some very good shops but now it has definitely gone down the pan.
Still worth a visit but keep your eyes open and don't get scammed by some of the dodgy folk who once upon a time were not allowed anywhere near the place.

Tradition means we always go back to Old Town and Im afraid every year it gets worse and worse.
2 years ago was the last time and it was so dirty we left after a little while as we drove away I screamed so loud my husband panicked driving the car, there were 2 huge Cockroaches walking over our seats. My husband had to pull over as soon as he could because I was in such panic and would not get into the car for around 15 mins until my husband had fully checked the car.
We are going back to Florida again this year, and I suppose "Tradition" we will just have to go and have a look but I will check everything before we drive off.
Its a shame because it was lovely when we first went years and years ago, when they were selling Pepsi for 5c and Popcorn in loads of flavours.

I remember in the late 80's when Old Town used to have an Elvis museum with loads of clothes and furniture in it and 3 of his cars one of which was Herbie! It turned out he bought it because he loved the fims so much. We stayed almost across the road at a hotel called Best Western Eastgate. No one else seems to remember this hotel or the museum but I didn't dream it even though I was only 11 at the time.

I am glad someone else remembered it. Last time I asked if it was still their I felt like I had dreamed it as no one knew about it. I thought it was very intresting even at a young age. I did find the place a bit creepy being young and looking at loads of items that belonged to a dead man. Shame it didn't last. Do you know when and why it closed? I wonder where those cars ended up.
I have just come back on sunday, we went to kissimmee old town a few times, we felt safe, went to car parade on a friday and on the following thursday went to the bike parade, never had any problems, had someone else said, go and judge for yourself, we still enjoyed it

Not sure why/when it closed, we can only pin it down to between 1989 - 1994.

The VW Beetle is one that was driven backwards by a hidden stuntman using an extra steering wheel and controls looking out through the rear window.
It currently resides in the Celebrity Hotel, Main Street, Deadwood, South Dakota, alongside other cars from movies - Smoky And The Bandit Trans-Am, 007 Aston Martin Vantage....
Elvis is still alive by the way. :erm:

I still love oldtown. We have never had a problem with it apart from going once and half of the shops being closed. It was admittedly at the end of a hurricane though.
Me and my brother like the arcade and the cars. We tend to go to damons around 4pm when its almost completly empty, then after we head over to walk round the shops. I like black market minerals and the shop that sells all the dog stuff.

Forget the bad reports about Old Town, its no worse now than it was a couple of years ago.Admittedly, there is more than the one bar to get a beer from now, but we did our traditional first Saturday visit to the car cruise on April 1st, the place was packed as usual and a few out of thousands of people were walking round holding a bottle of Bud, Oh by the way, the brown paper bags, they are to soak up the condensation on the bottles as they are very much chilled.
No drunks, no druggies,no problems whatsoever.
Went again last Thursday for the bike night, around 500 bikes there with both male and female owners, fantastic atmosphere and again the place was packed, again no drunks or druggies as has been mentioned on here in the past.
Friday evening went to Downtown Disney................cop cars parked in several locations near the entrances to DTD, like behind Cirque and the Virgin Megastore, people walking round with bottles of beer, especially near the House of Blues and the cocktail bar nearby, and the smell of cigars was enough to make me sick, both men and women sucking away on these huge cigars, the place stunk like a tap room.........oh yes ,nearly forgot the poor Disney worker cleaning up the pool of vomit some kind soul left for her in the middle of the walkway near Planet Hollywood.
This was before 9pm, so god knows what its like later when people come out of the clubs.
Have to say I didnt like it one bit and you can give me Old Town on Saturday night ....ANYTIME.

Good post Stuart, I agree with what you have said here and like a lot of people it's a tradition for us to visit old town now.
The only time I nearly saw some trouble there was when I videoing the children on one of the Sky rides and the staff kept trying to prevent us from filming obviously wanting us to buy THERE copy.
I must admit I pretty wound up about and had a right 'go' about it, the staff threatened to call the police so I stood my ground and said I would wait while they called 9 1 1. (they didn't of course)
Another Brit there, also videoing his family got so wound up that he grabbed one of the staff round the throat !

The car cruise on Sat !st of April had over 300 cars in attendance and the place was packed. Great atmosphere as was the Thursday nite Bike Show. Hundreds of Harleys, Choppers and sport bikes, a good evening out.
Yes the Sky Coaster is still there, Not that I've got the bottle to give it a go,lol
