It's a big centrifuge. People hate it or love it, but it has been toned down after being a little too "aggressive". My wife hated it, I thought it was OK, kids loved it. Not a ride to take any risks on though if you meet any of the "don't ride" criteria, it can be quite claustrophobic/nauseating.

If you are unsure (which you seem to be!) then I would err on the side of caution, for the sake of spoiling the rest of your day.

If its been toned down I dread to think what it was like before,!!!

I an mot normally clostaphobic (sp!) but on this ride I did feel it a little, I was glad they pump fresh air on your face the whole time otherwise I think I would have hated it!

There were reports of people having medical problems (heart and chest related, panic related as well), and there was the sad case of the young boy who passed out and died. You can't be cat- or MRI-scanned before you go in, and the first versions of the ride were simply too violent (too fast, too many Gs being exerted, combined with claustrophobic enclosure).

Potentially, it's a good ride, but I think it's just not comfortable for most people to be slapped into what is essentially a massive tumble drier!

We went on it in 2003, my daughter aged 12 then + me and a friend. There are plenty of warnings b4 you ride. providing you have none of the conditions and you can stand a bit of spinning then the experience is brillant. But I am sure there are many that have used the bags provided !!!:D

went on it twice in 1 day (dbf did it 3times!) last year and would not do it again, luckily we had some headache tablets with us. I'll attempt it once this year but that will be my limit

I think the top tip for M:S would be to stand still for a few moments after you come off, rather than try to walk out straight away. I saw lots of people unable to walk in a straight line as they came off. But the feeling soon passes.

I loved it. Hope to do it again in a few weeks time.

This was my absolute favourite ride (and I'm not an extreme ride person) I rode it several times and was fine apart from a bit of a wobbly knee feeling after the first ride.
Try it once, if you don't like it you never have to do it again. Get a Fastpass and do it towards the end of the day if you are worried how it will make you feel. I have heard of people feeling off colour all day afterwards and you wouldn't want that to spoil a whole day.
If you decide not to ride you can still enjoy the whole queue area and the 'astronaut training' as there is a chicken exit just before you enter the capsules.

Went on it twice and love it, Its brill, very very clever how its fools you into feeling weightless etc. My only gripe was that its not long enough. It does leave you feeling a little disoriented for a couple of minutes after you come off.
You should definitely try it.

I love all rides and have been on every rollercoaster in Disney/Busch/IOA but I hated this ride. I was fine when I was on it as it's not scary at all and you're not aware of the spinning but as soon as I got off I had a headache for the rest of the day, as did my Mum who had to lie in a darkened room for the rest of the evening. I will never go on this ride again as there are so many better things I'd rather go on that don't leave me feeling sick.

my DH felt very ill for hours (yes hours as in 4-5hours) after going on it and it spoilt his whole day as we rode it fairly early in the day.
he got off and the colour had completely drained out of him...
If u put it in the search box you should find the thread which comments on how bad people have felt after riding it.
It was ok but not one i would do again (BTW i have done kraken 3 times so im not a scardy cat just didnt like this overly)

I must say when my ds and i were queuing to go on this ride i nearly chickened out right at the last minute but ds wouldn't let me - the warnings were frightening the life out of me and so was this american guy infront of us - but i am glad i went on it because i thought it was fine - even though i am a crap traveller usually i was ok on this.

not sure if I should give this one a go, I don't wanna take the risk of feeling ill, it's probably not worth it

We went on it four days before it officially opened in 2003. We were a bit concerned about what happens inside but were "up for it". Basically, you go in groups of 4 and each of you is given a fictitious job to perform (captain, navigator, etc). You wait in your 4 for the doors to open and you take your seats. There are several "pods" all loading at the same time. There is information inside which tells you that you must fix your gaze if you feel sick (although I now believe they have sick bags in there). Then you have your countdown and you are sitting in a seat in front of a control panel and lookig at really good graphics of a rocket taking off. Then you are aware that you feel a bit odd - then you feel really, really odd. I couldn't speak and the kids asked me if I was all right and I said that I was trying to keep my face on. You are not thrown upside down or aware of anything other than this lightheaded, face-pulling sensation. When I got off, I felt very disoriented and was asked by a Disney employee if I was OK. We were all really upbeat when we got off and it was only last week when the woman died that we all talked about it and it turns out we were all of the same opinion - we probably won't do it again. None of us like it that much - so apologies to anybody who read my earlier posts when I was enthusing about it. Sorry - they were all fibs.

The ride is great and has killed no one, they were going to die anyway as they were ill. The ride has less G's than roller coasters and is fine as long as you do not take your eyes off the screen. Once you do that you feel sick as your body suddenly realises your been spun around. The screen tells the eyes to tell the mind that you are going up so all is fine, if you let the body work out that you in fact in a huge washing machine then it gets peed off and makes you loose the lunch! We went on it in sep 2004 very good indeed, get the feeling of being weightless, and being in space
makes you feel like you have been spun round alot (which of cause you have)
well worth a visit, saw an old lady (70ish) being sick after getting off it though, so if you dont like feeling dizzy when you get off a ride then do not go on it :)

I am genuinely bemused at all the people adversely affected by this ride or just lucky I guess:confused2
We did it in September, twice in very quick succession (walked out exit and back in, no queues!!) and were absolutely unaffected by it - both myself and DH!!! Loved the G-force bit, really felt like you were taking off and as another poster said, you are unaware of the spinning. When we got off, we were both the same as before we got on and were quite amazed at the number of people outside leaning against the wall looking very pale or green..............

Try it, you may really like it and be unaffected like us. We cannot be the only ones surely???

Looking forward to Mission Space again at Christmas:thumbs-up

I have to agree with some of the previous posters..the build up was much worse than the ride itself !:confused2

We are exactly the same. DS2 loved this so much we went on it about 30times last year. We were lucky as when we came off we got straight back on, no wait nearly evey time. Yet the wait at test track was 60mins+. No adverse side effects and the only gripe is that it didnt last long enough. DH and DD and DS1 thought it was OK, they all prefered Soarin. But nodody was sick or felt out of sorts.

Did anyone manage to press the button directly after take off? Both times I was on it, it was a "computer override" job. The first time I thought it was because it was a youngster asigned. But the second time, the guy said he physically couldnt reach it to press it! (ie he was pinned back!)

yes i got that too, people get in the ride and dont seem to listen to the instructions or dont want to join in the fun, so i was the only one pressing the buttons or computer overide.

I too suffered no ill effects just really enjoyed it. I struggle with Roller Coasters but am the only one in my family that can do the Tea Cup types of rides.

I think the trick is as has already been said, fix your gaze on the screen, and you get all the effects of the space experience without the feeling of being spun around.

I loved it and I'm the biggest wuss out there! Won't go on anything that turns you upside down. don't know what this ride does to you (and don't want to, thanks!! Or I'll probably not go on it again  ). I've been on it about 5 times on various trips and every time I get chicken in the q and say I don't want to go - it's just the biuld up, it's sooo good, even when you've been on it and KNOW it's ok, it still scares you!

BTW, when it said 'don't go if you don't like being spun around' - how do you know?? I thought, well I've always been ok driving round roundabouts so let's give it a go ;)

I think Mission space is an excellent ride.

I was seriously worried about it the first time as if I sit in the back of a car I get really travel sick ..and it lasts for hours :(

with it being in Epcot the home of the Food and Wine festival I was worried about when to ride.. first thing in the morning and I could be ill all day and ruin my food and wine experience .. last thing but having sampled lots of wine .. maybe not a good idea..

I thought blow it and rode it in the morning.. was that worried I didn't hear or see any warnings!! LOL

I was absolutely fine .. top tip is to make sure you get into the images on the screen.. go beyond the glass and into the images..

though after going on this ride several times I decided to look to the right to see what it felt like.. NOT reccommended as I couldn't get back 'into' the images and felt really disorientated ..

I would say give it a try and do not panic as the first 30 seconds are quite intense but then it eases off :)

We did Mission Space last week the graphics and effects were amazing. Did leave me feeling a bit sick though and had a bit of rouble trying to walk properly, but that passed quickly. My mum hated every minute of it and couldn't wait to get off.

In my opinion MISS IT! There have been deaths and injuries on this ride. Its not worth the risk. It may not affect you at all but what if it does? It has ruined a lot of peoples day, with them feeling sick and having sore heads. Plus if that happens you will miss Soarin!

23 Apr 06, 10:10 PM
No, do it - they show you tapes in the queue line about how the ride works, and if you still don't like it, you can opt out - but if you like this sort of thing, and you miss it, you'll never forgive yourself. It's WICKED!!! :D

Went on it only last week, and if that's toned down that I really would hate to be on it before.... Probably the most intense ride we went on during our stay in Orlando. I came off and had to sit down for a few minutes as I was all over the place! My girlfriend was fine though! Anyway, after those few minutes I was fine again, and we make our way over to Test Track ;-)

Still, I'd say it's one to be experienced. The feeling of a rocket take off is awesome.

I thought they had closed mission space recently? I assume from your comments that it is back open again.

I love this ride but Dh hates it wont go on it after the first ride in 2003.

If you suffer from motion sickness etc.... I wouldnt advise you to go on it, but other than that go for it!!!

As for people dying on it like someone previously has said they had undiagnosed medical conditions, so this could of happened on dumbo ride or somthing.

My DH took my eldest DS(6) on this in Feb!!! I was dreading him(DS) going on as he is car sick only metres from the house, but DH wanted to take him on and DS really wanted to......well I waited with youngest DS at the exit and............DH felt really sick and dizzy(this is a man that does every rollercoaster, adrenaline rush experience, skydiving, abseiling etc)and DS was jumping up and down wanting to go back on!!!!!!!!:confused2 :confused2

So it's quite strange really how it affects people!!! I myself would not go on as I can't tolerate spinning things as I have inner ear problems but if you have no conditions to agravate go for it,you only live once and that's what you pay your entrance ticket for!!!!!!!:spin:
