We're thinking of going to see Pirates. Is it any good? And is it worth the money?

My mum also wants to go to Dollys Dixie Stampede.

Any opinions?

My DS is 3. My DD is 6. And my little bro is 11.....

on our last holiday in 2004. We all absolutely loved the Dolly Parton one including my husband who had to be dragged kicking and screaming to it!! In fact we have just booked for Orlando next year and he is paying to take everyone to it again. The Pirates one is okay but I didnt find it comparable to the Dolly Parton one. the food wasnt nearly as good - vegetable werent well cooked and all the coke in jugs was really flat. Plus, and I wonder if anyone else found this, I actually found the Pirates show quite violent and unsuitable for young children. Im no prude and I did expect punching etc but at one stage thay had a pirate pinned down on the floor while the other took turn to 'pretend' kick him in the head and jump on his head - I found this quite unsettling with a 3 year old next to me cheering them on.

Hope this if some help

Thanks

So what happens at DDS?
Because Dolly Parton is not someone who really interests me....

It was great! The food was good, not fantastic but certainly edible. The best part for us was the skill of the horses and the knights tho'! The knights would joust in the arena until one of them won the hand of the princess - really entertaining and I think your 6 year old would love it. The seating is split into different sections and each section had its own knight to cheer on so it's very interactive :thumb:

Hi Big Bird (Great name!), I went to DDS last year and I have to say that I had severe misgivings - but I really enjoyed myself. There was a bit of a cabaret sing-song prelude before you go into a big arena and are split into two teams, north and south, based on whereabouts in the arena you sit. There's various stunts, horseriding etc, etc and at the same time you're served fantastic food and a personal message from Dolly herself! I couldn't do the show justice on here, but I wasn't really too fussed about going but we will probably go again next time. Any show that gives you the chance to chase chickens is a winner in my book, and I haven't even mentioned the piglet hurdling!

We went to Pirates and it's really not that great. The food was just OK, but rather cold. The show was noisy and - for me anyway - a bit boring. I think the whole family were fairly underwhelmed. They did love Sleuths, but that was in 1999, so I'm not sure what it's like now.

We did not like Arabian Nights and it put us off dinner shows, but i have heard good things about dolly partons, so we might try that this time but Arabian Nights was terrible the food was worse than airplane food.

We went to Arabian Knights and loved it! The food was fine. the show lovely, my DD t hoguht it was wonderful. There are lots of horses and the main thrust of the story is a princess being rescued and happy ever after stuff. Just the thing for little princesses! The pre-show entertainmetn was good and the cast all posed for pictures afterwards with the children. I would say give it a go!

We went to Pirates in Oct 2005. We were slightly disappointed in the show. Especially at the end when your food server comes round with a tip tray asking for donations of four dollars or above for each member of your group. That really took the edge off it. Lots of money making opportunities for them as well, as they ask you to arrive early for a pre-dinner buffet. We were allocated a seat at the back of the show, the whole event is very noisy and you do tend to miss parts of it as they ask for audience participation, so my husband and son went missing for half an hour. I would rate it 5/10.

I thought everyone was entitled to their own well resoned opinions - this does not seem to fall into that category. Some people will have thought pirates very good - we enjoyed it thoroughly - it was great fun for the children especially. I think your comment somewhat dissmissive and harsh

dvc, do you think that the violence levels are ok for a six year old girl and a three year old boy?:confused2
And what do you think the food was like?

kids will love pirates, violence is comedy style so don't worry about that, its not the west end but it is family style entertainment, Dixie stampede is better food wise etc but still entertaining, to be honest with your kids ages they would prefer pirates for the fun and swords but Dixie is more superior show :)
