Consider whether you will want a wheelchair for use outside the parks too, for shopping or other attractions or even getting around at your resort. If so then an offsite rental is the way to go, but bear in mind you will then have to think about how you would transport a chair.
You would be best to get quotes to compare prices before you decide. This thread (http://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=89582) has some links you could try.

thankyou, ill be fine with the hotel + transport to/from the parks.
i can do short walks so downtown disney shouldnt be a problem (bieng opposite our hotel), its just the size of the parks that worries me, hubby will b pushing dd2 in her buggy so an electric chair is the only option but its yet more expense!!! jo xx

If you rely on getting one at the parks you would have to make sure you get to the parks early and not park hop. They will hold the chair for you if you want to leave the one park and return to that same park later that day but you cannot be guaranteed of one if you are going to be park hopping.
They only have a limited supply and from what I could see were generally sold out by mid morning/lunch time. Although if you were to go to a 2nd park later on you might be lucky and someone might have left for the day but it is not guaranteed.
You do, however, only pay once per day as you can just use your receipt to get the chair at the next park.
I knew I would certainly need one and so I rented one from outside the park from Walker Mobility. It was $270 for the week but I needed the more substantial ECV. The prices do work out the same if you were going to be renting one in the park each day.
Taking the ECV onto the Disney transport was fine. The bus drivers are used to inexperienced users and give you all the help you need. You just ride it up the ramp or onto the lift and then park it up at the side of the bus. It is generally easier to back it into place then go on forwards.
