Off to Turkey next Monday. First time in Turkey, picked come nice apartments Club Alize which get good reviews :) and the weather is looking great:cool2: . After all this rain I should be pleased to go anywhere but I cant help feeling apprehensive. Cant put my finger on exactly what Im worried about:confused2 . Any tips or words of assurance from anyone who has visted Turkey.

Not been myself, but my sister has visited Marmaris twice and loves it. She says the markets are great for really cheap sweatshirts like Adidas and Timberland.
Have a great time.

Went last September - weather is gorgeous :cool2:
people are really nice out there but some of the men are a little full on
they offered three camels and a chicken to buy me :blush:
But apart from that it was a nice week :d:

we spent a week in Marmaris & a week in Olu Deniz about 10 yrs ago, on our drive from the airport we thought we'd made a mistake - grubby looking shacks lining the road - which was full of pot holes, and woken at about 5.30am next morning by the 'call to prayer' :erm: :d: but after the initial misgivings we loved it - best holiday ever ( apart from florida ) Marmaris was just the right size to wander round ( but they had no road names displayed - don't know if they do now, so take note of which turnings you are taking :) )The castle was nice , with some lovely views, and try to do some of the day trips, we did Ephesus, Pammukale, Jeep safari, & a boat trip, even bought an authentic turkish carpet ( never got the hang of bartering though :( ) Yes the restaurant owners /stall holders can be a bit of a nuisance, but we found the best way to deter them was to say 'sorry we've already eaten' or ' we've already bought one' or for the people trying to sell you day trips ' we are going home today ' ( some strange looks when they see you again the next day & the next :d: on the whole the people were lovely & Turkey was beautiful !

I have been going to Turkey for the past 12 years, and have probably been in excess of 16 times!.
I flew back yesterday from a different part to where you are going, but temp was in mid to high 80's already.
I have been to Marmaris 3 times over these years, and it probably the most touristy part of Turkey that I have been to. The people are friendly, but shop and restaurant owners can sometimes be a bit pushy.
It is very cheap to eat out and shopping is good with fake designer gear, jewellery shops (gold) are very good.
I have no concerns about this country whether I go with family or friends, I really do love it there.
Hope this is some help.

I knew i should have held out for the chicken, mind you the camels are doing well, if only they could cook & iron;)

Funny :d: :d:
Actually my dad did try to bargain with them - he thought they should have offered to throw in a goat ;)

We went to Icemeler, which is just down the road from Maramaris, last October. It was very hot even then, the people are very friendly and welcoming. The bar and resturant owners can be a bit of a pain but you just have to tell them you've just eaten and will come back later. There is plenty to do, it's a hagglers paradise in the markets, the boat trips are fantastic.
Marmaris is a lively place at night if you want a quieter night get the dolmus(local bus service) to Icemeler. If you like history and want a good day out do the Ephesus trip, it's a bit of a trek but well worth it.
Hope you have a great time.
P.S. make sure when you are coming home to buy your drink, food etc, before you go through passport control as it's extortionate on the other side especially if your flight gets delayed like ours.

Well....I lived in Turkey for a year...courtesy of the US Army :)

I loved it...I had no problem with eating food anywhere in Turkey but I don't think even the Turks drink the water...we didn't use the water to even brush our teeth.

I also got offered to be purchased in Istanbul...guess blue eyed blondes in 1987 were worth some camels and a belly dancer :)

Don't feel bad about bartering....ask for some "chi" (tea) and just remember the phrase "choke pahaley" (spelled phonetically...means too expensive)

Thank you= tesh eker
Please=lutfen
Yes=evette

And if it is anything like Istanbul or Ankara...there will be boys asking to shine your shoes even if they are trainers!
