Hi, what is the best way of getting from the airport to our hotel? Should we get a taxi or try to book something before we go?

Hi - we were in New York a few weeks ago. We organised transfers - £15 each way with Virgin. While we were there in was advertised in the cabs that it was a set taxi fare from JFK to any midtown manhatten hotel at $45 plus tips and tolls. Back to the airport was negotiable with cab driver.

The transfers with virgin we fine but it took a long time for people to get through emigration at JFK so we had to wait a while for a mini bus full and then we were dropping people off at various hotels - back though the mini bus just picked up at our hotel and then went straight to airport. On the way from the airport the driver gave you tips and showed you sights along the way which was useful.

Suppose it depends how many of you are going as to what will be most cost effective for you?

Have a great time, i'm sure you will!

We didn't bother pre-booking anything and found when we reached JFK that there were lots of taxi's readily available outside. You will probably be approached by unlicensed cab drivers touting for buisness but you are advised to only use the licensed Yellow Cabs as these have the set price of $45 mentioned above. But there were lots of them waiting in line - the airport have taxi marshalls at the rank that take the details of where you are going and they fill out a ticket and hand it to the driver.

The concierge at your hotel will be able to book a taxi for your return.

Have a great trip.

When you get outside JFK Airpot there is a guy advertising a bus service (The bus is normally there too) that will drop you off at any of the hotels in NY, and arrange pick up too. The cost was about $15 per person return trip. For your pickup you just call the number on your receipt the day before you travel to arrange a time for you to get back to the airport.

We found this really easy and at $15 pp was well worth the money:thumbs-up

we got the bus transfer to the hotel on arrival, but on the way back the hotel arranged a sadan car transfer back to the airport for a fixed price.Much more comfortable especially with all the extra baggage due to all the shopping you end up doiing whilst in New York

We did the minibus from JFK to our hotel - $15 per person (don't forget to tip!!!). You pay the driver when you arrive at your destination and booked at car for the return journey from Newark. There are plently of cab firms on the Internet sites for the airports. Ours was 777cars (originally tel aviv cars)

we got a cab from the front door at JFK, it is $45 per car (not pp) to manhattan, they are very strictly enforced prices, so you won't be done if you join the proper taxi rank, a guy asks where you are going and gives you a chitty with the price on excluding tip

We arrived about 9 in the evening I think and it too about 35-40 mins to get to manhattan

For 4 of us this was the cheapest and most convenient option:thumbs-up

Both times we've flown into JFK and used Super Shuttle - we go to the desk in the transportation area and ask them to call and book us on the next available one. When it arrives, they call your names and you pay the driver directly.

I can't remember how much it cost, but it was very reasonable and cheaper than a taxi with the two of us. You are obviously travelling with more people but you get a good view as you travel into Manhattan as you're higher up :)
