Child passport changing to an adult passport- help please?
 

:confused2My son's passport runs out in a few months and he turns 18 beforehand. Will his new passport be an Adult First (includes passport interview) even though he already has a childs passport, or an Adult Renewal or Amend or an Adult Replacement?

:confused2Also, my daughter's passport runs out at the same time and she will just have turned 17. Does she have to have a new passport when hers expires and change again to an adult passport when she is 18, or keep the child passport until she is 22?

To be honest I think on questions as important as this you would be best phoning the passport office on freephone 0300 222 0000. Nowadays they are very quick to answer and will have the correct information at hand.

Children must apply for adult passports if they have reached the age of 16 and their passport has expired. We did this for DS 2 years ago you can't aply for a childs 5 year passport if you've reached the age of 16

Thats good, I can just apply for adult ones for both of them when they expire when they are aged 17 and 18. You can obviously use them above the age of 16 until they expire because my son used his child passport last year aged 17. Do you know if they need an interview when they change to an adult one?

When we renewed our daughter's passport with the change from child to adult 2 years ago she didn't need to do the interview because she has already had a passport. It is only if you have never held a passport that you have the interview.

that good to hear, my DD is 16 at they end of the year but her doesnt expire until 2013, so she can carry on using it until it expire and then will get an adult 10 year passport, its all so confussing is'nt it :confused2

not sure if thats right our dd didnt need an interview 3 years ago when she renewed how ever our friends son did need one and they applied at the same time and are only 3weeks apart in age:confused2

Application for a young person over the age of 16
When a child reaches 16 they can apply for a first adult passport if either of the following is true:

•they never had a child passport
•they were included on a parent's passport rather than having a child passport of their own

If they have a child passport they can continue to use it until it runs out. The next passport they apply for should be an adult passport renewal.
Renewing or extending your adult passport

Who can renew their passport
You can apply to renew your passport if you still have your last passport and:

•it was a standard UK adult ten-year passport or a UK five-year child's passport issued before you were 16
•it is undamaged
•you do not need to change your name or national status

You cannot renew your passport if:
•you were previously included as a child on someone else's passport
In this case you will need to apply for a first adult passport.

In 'the guide to filling in your passport' booklet it says

Adult tick box, RENEWAL
put a cross in this box if you are 16 or over or if you are a child who is likely to become 16 before we issue your new passport and you have a fully valid passport which, you want to renew, is not damaged, does not need to have any details changed.

In this case fill in sections 2,3,and 9.
You don't need the photos countersigned unless your appearance has changed.

You don't need an interview unless you have never had a passport before, and this is your first application.

Adult replacement means if your passport has been damaged, lost or stolen.
