Where's the Mouse? Day 11 Red Rock Canyon
Where’s the mouse? Day 11 Red Rock Canyon.
Written by Jools Photographs by Bill. We were up early today as we wanted to go to red Rock Canyon which was we had been told only about a 40 minute drive from the strip. We set off and with the help of the lady in the Tom Tom were soon on the road to the Red Rock Canyon. She took us through a residential area and we were surprised at how nice it all was. The streets were very wide and lined with trees. The houses looked lovely. I took some photos as Bill drove, but they didn’t come out very well. (that’s because you left the lens cap on dear – Bill). In what seemed like no time at all we were at the Canyon. It cost us $5 for a parking pass for inside the visitor centre. This was the only fee we had to pay, which we were very surprised at. There is a 13 mile scenic route which goes all the way around the canyon and it has numerous stopping places to get out and look around, and plenty of quiet roads. The first one by the visitor centre has a sort of nature trail around it. This was very interesting. There was also a tortoise habitat and here is a picture of a dessert tortoise we saw. Poor thing I bet it burned it’s feet walking across that hot ground. It moved pretty quickly so maybe I’m right. The scenery was spectacular and it was hard to believe it was only about 40 minutes from the gaudiness of the strip. It was so peaceful and clean. We really liked being away from the hustle and bustle and being so close to nature. (Sorry if that sounds cheesy but it’s true). The actual red rock was stunning, the photos don’t really do it justice but here are some anyway. I was interested to know why the rocks were red and apparently it’s because about 180 million years ago a giant sand dune field formed over what became the Western United States. Powerful winds shifted the sands back and foward until they formed angled lines in the sand. Over time the sheer weight of the sand compressed the sand into stone, and we now have the beauty of it all to enjoy. In addition to being able to view the canyon there were also various hikes to be walked if that’s your thing. This shows the various walks that can be done and the difficulty rating. We both had our sandals on so couldn’t do the walks – drat! Maybe next time if the weather is cooler . We saw lots of people getting ready for the hikes and also cyclists racing through the hills on the mountain bikes. They must be fit. We spent the entire day at the canyon just marvelling at the sights and taking lots of photos. And I took one of Bill, he was feeling the heat so didn't get out of the car - it was very hot. We were hungry by the time we got back to the resort at around 5pm so got ready to go out for dinner. One of our favourite restaurants in Orlando is Dan Marinos, and we were disapointed that it was closed for re modelling the last time we were there. We were delighted to find there is also one in Vegas and not too far from where we are staying. Off we went to Dan’s, which happens to be at the Hooters hotel and Casino. Bill had French onion soup with cheese for starters and then an 8 ounce skirt staek. I had my favourite when in Orlando, chicken breast hunter style. Bill had Coke to drink and I had a Quarterback colada. We enjoyed our meals very much and thought the bill of $55 was very reasonable. I asked Bill where he fancied going after the meal. Would you beleive he suggested having a look in the Hooters Casino as it was attached to the restaurant. It was all very bright and jolly in there and the cocktail waitresess were Hooters girls. I don’t see what all the fuss is about myself, but Bill liked it in there From there we went to some other Casino (can’t remember the name sorry) that we each had free $50 slot machine tickets for. It cost $5 for each go though so we soon got through them without winning anything. For some inexplicable reason Bill wanted to go to Walmart (isn’t that supposed to be my calling in life?). We had got directions from someone at the resort and set off for there. Well I can’t tell you how disapointing it was compared to all the ones we have visited in Florida. There was the tiniest food section ever and we left without buying anything. We went into a good old Walgreens instead where Bill bought soft drinks and I got the latest National Enquirer for our DD at home. We then returned to the resort as it had been a long day and we were going out early again the following day. Tomorrow – |

What a great place is Red Rock Canyon - we spent hours there in June - there's so much to see, and we couldn't believe the number of cars just driving round without stopping!

Hi Bill and Jools
Love the tortoise! You had a lovely day, I know what you mean about getting away from it all. We drove to Hoover dam one day and saw Grand Canyon another day. Dont think I could stay in Vegas for a week! Jackie
