The Moretons Amazing California Adventure - Day 13

DAY 13 – SAN DIEGO ZOO

It was no surprise that Lee was up first today, the Zoo had been the day he had been looking forward to the most in San Diego. The Zoo was opening at 9am so we left the house just after 8.15am, it was only 10 miles away and traffic was quite light so we found ourselves parking in the Parrot section by 8.45am. The parking seemed to be free, by this I mean no one took our money and we didn’t see anywhere to pay.

The entrance to the Zoo is only a short walk from the car park; as soon as we were inside we followed Dibb advice and headed towards the tour bus. We were on the top deck of the first bus of the day. It was a great tour and gave us a good idea of the layout of the sea; it also showed how big the Zoo was.

The best bit of the tour was undoubtly seeing the Polar Bears they were all in the enclosure and very active, we got a great view from the left hand side of the bus.

All the times we have been to Seaworld and never seen the polar bears move a muscle

The tour took around 40 minutes and we saw a lot of animals, the guide was very informative. We got off the bus where we got on (the tour bus only starts and stops at the same place) and tried to go round the Zoo in a clockwise direction.

The best tip I can give you is to make a plan and try to stick to it the Zoo is huge and you won’t see everything if you don’t stick to a plan. We loved the Koala Bears, the were very cute.

The only mistake we made was getting to the Panda’s late morning, they were all fast a sleep, it was still great to see them though but if we were to visit again we would head to the Panda’s first and then go on the bus tour. I am so disappointed not to be able to post a decent panda picture they just didn't play ball and we didn't get to enjoy them at all. maybe next time

We saw every bit of the Zoo apart from the petting area. It was a very enjoyable day but be warned you walk miles and quite a lot of the Zoo is up hills. The enclosures are great and you can get some great views. We took the cable cars to get from one side of the Zoo to the other, I wouldn’t say I enjoyed this part as I was scared out of my wits but there are some great views.

Another good way of getting around is using the Kangaroo Bus, this has 4 (maybe 5) stops around the Zoo where you can get on and off and see the various enclosures. It will save time and help your feet! We left the Zoo at around 4pm and although our legs and feet were hurting we all had a great day, the crowds were not to bad. There was a lot of renovation work going on while we there. They were re-building the tiger enclosure and building new enclosures in Wild Africa. The work did not affect us in anyway as the animals had been moved to temporary enclosures.

All in all we LOVED the world Famous San Diego Zoo and would love to head back here one day.

For dinner we were off to Olive Garden, which was about 8 miles away from the Zoo. Aims had warned us that it was the opening day of the Baseball season and the Padres had a sell out home game beginning at 3pm, we wanted to try and travel during the game as we knew traffic would be heavy after the game. We arrived at Olive Garden just before 5pm, there was a 20 minute wait for a table. All the food was very nice I love the giant bowls of salad they give you and Lee loves the bread, the only problem is that it fills you up before your main course! Lee and Dick had the tour of Italy, which they both enjoyed, I went for the Chicken Alfredo, Sue had a steak and some Tuscan potatoes and Jacob had the Spaghetti and meatballs, which was huge (hate to see the adult portion). Lee also had the Chicken dumpling soup before his meal, which he said, was delicious. The bill was $150 + tip. We had no room for puddings.
(No pictures from dinner tonight)

We managed to avoid the Baseball traffic and we were home before 7pm, the boys had a bath and fell asleep almost immediately. The rest of us relaxed and caught up with facebook and emails. We were all exhausted but tomorrow was a welcome rest day, well we had nothing planned but with Jacob and Lucas around you don’t get much rest J
