Cacti & Canyons Mar/April 2015 - Day 13 Zion Canyon

We woke up to the bluest of skies again this morning - which is certainly something I could never get tired of. Having learnt our lesson the day before we decided to give the hotel restaurant a try out for breakfast. Phew this turned out to be very tasty and actually the breakfast buffet was good value with not a microwaved breakfast burrito in sight!

We packed up and hit the road again, this time heading for Springdale and Zion Canyon, our final National Park of the trip. The drive was fabulous, amazing scenery sound tracked with the excellent Doobie Brothers Southbound album - awesome.

To get to Springdale we drove through Zion Canyon which we immediately fell in love with and particularly enjoyed travelling through a really long tunnel cut out of the rock which was quite exciting. As we approached Springdale, we could see that Zion Canyon seemed really busy and there were very few places to park as it is quite narrow. Fortunately, like many National Parks, Zion runs a free shuttle bus service throughout the park and nearby Springdale so we just decided to head to out motel and park up there.

We arrived at the wonderful sounding Bumbleberry Inn and although too early to check in, were able to leave the car. We pulled on our hiking gear and headed back to enjoy the park on this beautifully sunny day using the free buses. Soon we were back in the park, did a quick walk around the visitor centre, picked up a Junior Ranger booklet, filled up our water bottles and headed off to walk the nearby Watchman Trail.

The walk up was a bit hot with very little shade but the stunning views made up for it. We saw plenty of critters and the cacti were all in flower too. Once at the top up we sat and took in the view of the park and Springdale whilst eating our lunch, not much gets better than this in our opinion.

On the way back down, we looked out for things to be marked off in Daniel’s Junior ranger book including squirrels and chipmunks, although I was quite relieved not to see any tarantulas which live in the canyon too!

We made our way back to the bus stop and headed back to our motel to check-in. This was one of our favourite places of the whole trip. Springdale itself was just a fabulous small town, very friendly; laid back with great selection of shops and restaurants but without a chain in sight. Our room at the Bumbleberry Inn was huge with a balcony overlooking the inviting pool and mountains. As the weather had got considerably warmer, we headed to the pool to cool off and have a bit of a sunbathe.

That night on the recommendation of my sister, we headed to a little pizza restaurant called The Flying Monkey which did not disappoint. We enjoyed delicious wood fired pizzas, home-made raspberry lemonade and friendly service and would highly recommend if you are in the area. After dinner we had a wonder round the shops, picking up some souvenirs and then went back to our hotel to sit on the balcony - wishing we could stay in Springdale forever!
