Hi, I was wondering if anyone could tell me how checking out works on the last day? Our flight leaves at 7.50pm so I have worked out that we don't need to be at the airport until about 4.30ish. If I've worked this out right that gives us most of the day to kill so does the hotel take this into account? What do others do? Thanks,
Normally the hotel has a check out time, sometimes its midday, but if you have a word with them they may let you keep in on another few hours, We have done this before,
as above we do dtd checkin, head back to hotel, who we will have informed we need late checkout, the latest as we have been told each time is 1.00 as any later you have to pay for half day,we stay around the pool eat lunch in the hotel and if not in room have a shower by the pool, delux disney hotels have showers buy the pool get showered and head to the airport for last minute retail therapy
We've booked through thomas cook but the flights are virgin.
query with them if you are able to do DTD checkin, if so then get rid of the luggage and spend a few hours at a park or at DTD shopping. If you prefer to stay at the hotel and want to keep your room it is easy to arrange direct at the hotel but they'll probably charge a half day fee
Anybody on a Virgin flight can use DTD but unless you book with Virgin Holidays you will need to pay $10 each - it is worth it though to get rid of your luggage and know you are all checked in, we usually head to MK for a last wander round!
Disney resorts will let you keep your room for late checkout until 1pm without extra charge, some other hotels also do late checkout on request but will charge a fee. Some will hold luggage for you if you check out but don't leave for the airport until later in the day. At Disney resorts Bell Services will store your bags until you are ready to leave.

Am I right in guessing that you are staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge?

I see that you are flying with Virgin.
If staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, from memory you have to check out by 10.30am. Suggest that you take your cases to Downtown Disney and check in with Virgin, this will cost you USD10 per person as you have not booked with Virgin Holidays. You will now be free of your cases and have your boarding passes.
Keep your swimming cloths and sun cream in your hand luggage with a plastic bag. After you have checked in at Downtown Disney, return to Animal Kingdom Lodge and have a lazy day by the pool. In the toilets down by the pool are proper showers, shampoo is even provided and there are plenty of white towels provided by the pool. So all you will need is your costumes, a bit of sun cream (to be ditched before you fly) and a plastic bag to keep your wet costumes in.
Animal Kingdom Lodge is our favourite hotel, please see my hotel review. If this is your first time then have a look at my Disney notes (link below), this is 20 pages of tips & ideas aimed at first timers.

No we are not, we will be off site but thank you anyway as any advice is gratefully received. We would love to be staying on site but with 5 kids the cost would have been too much for us, still maybe one day.

The hotel won't take that into account.
They will have a standard checkout time so they can give a standard check in time to arrivals.
You could ask for a late checkout, this may cost or be complimentary, it varies from hotel to hotel and how busy it is.
Most hotels will store your luggage for you though if you didn't fancy the DTD option.
Location: 'God's Own County'. The home of the White Rose
Since becoming DVC owners we have to be checked out by 11am at a DVC Resort (no late check outs at all) we drop our luggage off at DTD, head back to our room for a quick freshen up and leave by 11am. We then head to Florida Mall for a relaxing lunch at Ruby Tuesday's before making our way to the airport.
Last time I did some last minute shopping at Abercrombie & Fitch, good job we didn't get our hand luggage weighed before our flight

Fairfield Inn LBV have always allowed us a 2pm check out for no fee. Every hotel has a different policy. Thats the only place we have ever asked, we usually check out before 12 (or 11 at some) and goto a park or shopping, leave luggage in the trunk.
