if your licence is like ours in the isle of man you will need both parts with you. as the photo card is not legal without the paper part.david

DH is always asked for both parts - not worth the risk of not taking it if it stops you getting a car. Its not going to take up a lot of space, to be safe rather than sorry.

HI Fellow Dibbers,

The reason for needing both parts of your driving licence is if your involved in accident you can't prove your not disqualified from driving, if you look at the counterpart, it will advice the police or hire companies of any current endorsements you have, not taking both parts with you like your are advised if hiring any vehicle can result in you receiving a fine, it is always clearly stated that you must carry all parts of your licence and car hire insurance documents whilst driving in the states, its the same in europe.

I have never taken my paper license and never been asked for it, I take your point about endorsements though and maybe I should ( If I can find it)

My hubby doesent have a photo licence he just has the paper one.Hes always been ok when getting the hire car as he has his passport for photo id.
