Can I have 2 routers?

Hi All, If I connect a new (supposedly fast) router to my ethernet switch to improve my wifi will this cause any problems, I know that effectively I will have 2 wireless networks but would this cause any issues.
I really need to move my existing router but that would envolve running around 6 cables through the wall to a new location.
Thanks Ted

I did this - worked fine.

Then I switched to using network plugs, which was more stable...and then Virgin increased my broadband speed, so wasn't an issue anymore.

Having 2 wireless networks is not a problem but I think you;'ll have to make sure only one is acting a DHCP server.

BUT you've said you want to connect a router to an existing switch so you' only have one router anyway ?

If you just want to extend the wifi range then there's probably an easier way than connecting a new router.

You can easily setup 2 wireless routers. If you have the exact same SSID, security settings (type of and actual password) you're devices will 'roam' seamlessly. You do need to, as Basset said, ensure that then new one is not operating as DHCP, but this is a simple config. Few things to watch though.
  1. When setting up the second router you'll be giving it a fixed IP address, ensure that you exclude this from the pool of dynamic addresses that your main router will use for WiFi devices.
  2. For best performance have the 2 routers set on different channels for the WiFi. Channels do overlap so probably best to keep then at least 5 or 6 apart.
  3. Obviously you will need a CAT6 (or 5) cable running between both routers in order to connect them
