My son has had serious back problems since birth and at 16 is now confined to a wheelchair with chronic pain. So hope your son gets better soon. As for mobility in the parks you have several options. As mentioned earlier you can hire a wheelchair on the day. Or if you are staying in a Disney Hotel they have loan wheelchairs for free. Alternatively you could contact your local Red Cross and hire for a small fee a wheelchair and take it with you. Don't forget to book assistance at the airports if you have a wheelchair or not.
