Struggling! With the LA area.

So, as part of our road trip we have things planned in LA.

We would like to see the usual touristy things, Hollywood, universal etc so we are struggling on a place to stay!

Our credentials are: feeling safe walking around
Happy to travel a bit if we are not in the immediate area
And not too expensive! (But not motel type accomadation!)

Where would you stay?

Thanks!

We normally stay with our son in Woodland Hills, but we have also rented a little house in studio city (close to Universal) as well as a few hotels close to Disneyland. The house was lovely - it seemed to be an extension of a main house where the owner lived, and we had a tiny little garden with fruit trees and a hammock! We had TWO bathrooms, a living room and a bedroom, as well as a full kitchen. There was a second bedroom, but we had that locked off for a reduction in price as only the two of us were travelling.

I've been recommended the Hilton Universal City by abiknox, worth taking a look.

What do you call not too expensive?

When I looked for LA , hotels (decent ones) imo were expensive not much for under $200 a night and that's why we ended up stopping at Anaheim where its cheaper... trade off is having to travel into LA though.

We stayed on Sunset Blvd. It was a smallish hotel and we walked around safely and got buses to the Chinese Theater and tours etc. from the Hotel. Can't for the life of me remember what it was called. But imagine there are loads round that area as its touristy.
