Is there gold in them there hills?
DS is getting confirmed next week and has taken up one of my suggestions for a gift, a cross necklace. Many internet searches I have done bring back us sites, seems there's more choice t there. Will it also be cheaper to buy gold there than here? As we will be in the states over summer, should I wait to buy there?
We have never bought jewellery there before, so don't know where to start!

Hi, yes I have always found it cheaper. But the main difference is gold in the US is 14 karat, not 9 or 18 like we get here.

Gosh, does that make a difference, the karat? I guess if we were looking for 9ct here, 14 there might be more expensive even if inot relatively so ... I guess the quality though of 14 is better than 9 ...

14k is purer than 9k, which you can equate to better quality (for less money). The colour is slightly different to our 9k (less brassy looking), therefore to ensure you get a match ensure you buy both the chain and the cross in the states.

It all comes down to you liking the piece of jewelry.
The cost of precious metals is controlled by a global market. Gold is not cheaper in US than here, if anything the 14k makes it more expensive than 9k by weight. Other (eastern) countries use 24k. |

That's interesting; won't it work out cheaper because of the dollar to pound rates?
