3 days in Washington DC... any tips?

We (me, DH and DD(16)) are staying in Washington for 3 nights/days at the end of June. Does anyone have any recommendations? I've pre-booked Washington Monument for first thing Day 2 but other than that have nothing planned yet. Is it worth getting a 2 day bus tour ticket or would the underground be better for getting around?
I'd appreciate any words of wisdom!
Thanks!

I really enjoyed the bus tour. I was there with work, so only had a day and half to explore. We did the whole tour in one go but obv. You would get on and off. We used the metro to get into town to see the White House and do some shopping on the first evening. But the bus tour for the days sightseeing.

We leave Washington on the morning of the 1st July!
I'll tell Barrack to look out for you when he invites us in for tea!
I've told DD to plan where she wants to go but exams trump holiday planning for now!
I've been told SPY museum is great but its not one of the free ones.
Have you booked your Washington Monument tickets.. its the only thing I've done.. not expensive and they posted them out to me!

I really recommend Old Town Trolley tours for the hop on hop off - I think two days would be fine. One of my absolute highlights was a nighttime tour they put on where you get to see the monuments illuminated at night. I highly recommend. You can prebook (free) tickets to see the declaration of independence and a tour of the capitol building. I really liked the Natural History Museum, so would recommend that too.

There was a gift shop near to the white house where you could get all your usual touristy purchases, plus if you spent a certain amount (not masses as I only bought a tshirt and a magnent) you could get your photo taken at a replica of the oval office and the resolute desk.

The smithsonian musuems are fantastic. You can just dip in and out of them, and seeing they are free you don't have to feel you need to spend ages at each. The botanical gardens which is near the capitol is lovely for a more relaxed wander.

One of my favourite parts of DC was just wandering along the mall - especially at dusk. It just is absolutely stunning.

Yep, we're in exam hell here as well! Thanks for putting in a word with Barrack!

Not even looked at Washington Monument. In fact got so much to plan as this is just part of the holiday, we are in the States for just under 3 weeks travelling about a bit. Spending some time with family, so that doesn't need planning much, and we were hoping to do a Disney Cruise in Florida, but they haven't reduced them, so looking at doing Universal for a few days, so something else to plan.

Got 2 days in New York at the end, although have been there once before, then we go to Rome for 3 days before going home, so got to sort that out too!

I love that all the Smithsonian museums are free. Also there is a zoo, which is also free, so that might be something else four our list as both the kids (teenagers) like zoos.

It might be difficult in 3 days - but a trip to Arlington Cemetery is always on my list for trips to DC. It is absolutely stunning and the Ceremonial Changing of the Guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier is amazing to watch. Apart from that I agree with the posts about museums and the bus tour. It's a great city.

Thanks for all the info. Lots to think about now. We are actually staying next to Arlington Cemetry instead of right in Washington so will def see there. Smithsonian is a definite esp as it's free.. Just need to decide which ones! Nighttime tour sounds fab.. Will look into it! Getting all excited now!
