We have had two different experiences of the weather in late July/early August!
In 2011, it was hot, hot, hot - temperature in the 30s and very humid. However, in 2013, it was significantly cooler, around 20 (or just above) and very windy but still pleasant enough for shorts during the day.

In view of comments about the heat on the subway would it be better to use the buses for getting around in August ? Are they good enough for most journeys?

We were there this year for the last 9 days in August this year. It was lovely and hot, but not as humid as we'd been warned. That was until the last coupl of days when it got very humid and I saw what they meant! So it looks as though it does vary from year to year.
We got the 7-day subway pass which was excellent value at $31. The subways were very hot as has been said. The pass does include the buses and we found that they were a lot cooler, sometimes too much so! The buses were a lot slower though due to the very busy New York traffic. We enjoyed using the buses as you could see more of the sights. If you have an iPhone or Android and will have access to data we found the Citymapper app to be excellent. Have a great time! |

Excited about Disney

We were there end of July this year, before Florida. It was not particularly hot at all. In fact one day we had drizzle and it felt quite chilly in the shade! I was expecting It to be really humid but it wasn't. The subway stations and passage ways were hot but the trains were not. We walked for miles and didn't struggle. It had been really hot in the UK before we flew so maybe we had become acclimatised! 😄

Thanks for replies we'll have to keep an eye on the forecast before we go. We'll have a fleece with us from the flight anyway but hopefully we won't need it.

I took a fleece but only needed it once, on a night-time cruise. Forgot to mention above that you will probably need some sort of cover-up (cardigan, shrug?) as the restaurant air conditioning can be fierce.
