easiest way to avoid is to choose a hire company that has transponders in each car and doesn't charge a massive admin fee like Alamo (not sure about the others).

This is a bit ambiguous, do Alamo charge a massive admin fee or not?
I haven't seen these new tolls yet, are they hidden from view or is there a gantry over the road that makes it obvious the toll is there? It sounds like you may be in a catch 22 situation if you're travelling through one of these tolls without a transponder. Or am a missing something here? Dave |

I was caught when the unmanned toll booth was faulty so now I use Budget platepass. I have just received the bill for 2 weeks with a good few journeys on toll roads ... £20.

Use a sunpass, enrol in a car rental scheme or plan your journey though the later doesn't cover all scenarios of wrong charging or faulty tolls.
Personally I don't see the $25 charge as excessive. That's about £17, so about 20 minutes at £51 an hour, not untypical for an overhead rate I would have thought for a large organisation. 20 minutes to process seems reasonable. |

sorry, my bad sentence construction - Alamo don't charge excessive fees
During our trip in October, we travelled from Miami to Orlando along the toll roads and got a charge to our CC for the $6.something that was the daily maximum they charge for tolls. Given the Florida Turnpike is electronic toll only, the only way to pay is electronically and I thought that the cost for us was quite reasonable. For what it's worth, I never thought any of the toll roads were invisible - it is obvious that they are toll roads with the large signs everywhere! Even those that have no kiosks were obviously signed as being toll roads. |

With a bit of prior thought, the answer (probably the cheapest and best for you) would be to use the SunPass that can be bought from a number of outlets.

I think one issue would be in the driver used a Sunpass and also hired a car from a company that does it all automatically like Alamo. I don't think they can turn the fitted transponder off so they could get charged twice or at least, they would find themselves getting charged for the Alamo solution and may have wasted the Sunpass? Not sure how that would work to be honest.

Totally agree-we drove from Mia to wdw last oct with Alamo and cost us next to nothing. We didn't pay anything up front, just got charged a few dollars on our card when we got back. Much better than before!
