I have never had a near decent quote for instore and they always seem very inflexible at our debenhams, even when i say its cheaper on TCD. I get a quote just to see roughly what I.'m looking at price wise and usually manage to knock off about a quarter, i suppose thats just their commission tho. Some people like to book face to face and that is what you are paying for.

Did you negotiate any discount in-store or was that just the price they gave you straight off? as they should give 7% discount if you're a flying club member (free to join if not). In-store manager can give up to 10% off and area manager can go higher (I had 18% discount off their web price one year).

I would go back with the quote from the other company and ask them to match/beat it, plus at Mr T said earlier, check the insurance given with the car hire as the only give basic initially and you have to pay for more cover.

Is it not easier to tell them where to stick it and use either their online system, or better still, either a competitor or DIY. Price is king!

Thanks everyone for your replies. I told them i had seen it cheaper on TCD and she looked it up there and then and got a higher quote... what she did though was leave the slider at £4000 as a minimum...my partner noticed that (decided not to say anything to see what 'deal' she might come up with). The quote was with our 7% flying club discount. I said i had gotten a cheaper quote elsewhere and said if we could return with a quote as a complete package and it was cheaper elsewhere...that they would price match it. We are going to print it off and return next sunday and see if they can price match or better. We have had some good deals in the past with the instore reps and this is why we thought we would return, (the lady we have seen for 5 years in succession is no longer there and she used to get us good deals..even compared to online) we even had one deal where it was cheaper to have a 5 bed villa (for 4 adults) than it was to have two hotel rooms!

am going to do some more research today...while it is chucking it down with rain here in Devon..and see what other deals i can get.

Thanks again for your replies

As I undersand it, although TCD is part of the Virgin group of companies, the Virgin shop would probably have been comparing their prices to the virgingholidays.co.uk wesite. TCD are always cheaper. BTW I can't see either Virgin holidays or TCD on Quidco, so there's no extra savings there. As others have said, don't bother with the car hire though TCD or Virgin, you'll save a few more £s, book the car & insurance elsewhere as it'll be cheaper than the 'free' car.

As the general rule of thumb, we nearly always do a DIY holiday package. Book flights separate, hotel, car etc. We've "never" used a travel agent in shop, have asked for quotes a few times but just walked out laughing at their double the price of quotes online. I booked 3 months ago for our holiday next April (which is usually around same price as September) and paid £2570 for 3 adults, 16 nights - VA flights, Cane Island condo, Plus full size car. I have found with Virgin Holidays in the past, what other companies charge "per room", they seem to charge that as "per person"...?

I always go prepared with online quotes, it's been 50/50 whether they've beaten them or not.

They rely on those that will happily pay whatever they quote to cover those that they discount to make the sale.
