for EU member states you shouldn't even need a passport

if you travel with travel agents such as thomson, first choice or thomas cook they require 6 months on the date of return, up to 9 months can be added onto a new passport though

The FCO advice for Greece is here.
Passport validity Non-EEA (European Economic Area) nationals travelling to Greece must have a passport valid for at least 3 months after the period of their intended stay or expiry date of their visa. Nationals of the EEA are exempt from the above regulation but must have a passport valid for the period of their intended stay. Same website advice for Spain Passport validity You need a passport or a National Identity Card (see the website of the Identity and Passports Service (IPS)) to enter Spain. There is no minimum passport validity requirement but you should ensure that your passport is valid for the proposed period of your stay. |

For Spain and Majorca you ONLY need the validity left for the return date of travel - you will be fine, I work in travel.
So if your return flight was 1st August and your passport ran out on 2nd August that would be absolutely FINE x x x |

As above, I also work in travel and she is right. Travelling within Europe you only need your passport to be valid for the period of intended stay in the visited country. As long as your son home on the DAY OF EXPIRY it is absolutely fine. No extended time is required. It just must be valid for the trip
