San F to LA via Joshua Tree NP - part 1 San Francisco. Extra detail plus lyft receipts
Day 1. Nice flight over Greenland.
Arrive SFO. Airport was a breeze, we chose the human passport control whilst many others queued for the machines, we were quicker and had a very chatty officer, which always helps ease the stress. My fingerprint check wouldn't work - as usual, top tip though from said officer, rub your fingers together, helps generate some oils which helps the machine see your fingerprints. Used the BART to get to Powell St, very quiet, $9 each I think. Powell St, shabby, found the hotel - Parc55 eventually. Not impressed, rooms were big but plumbing noisy and streets 14 floors below even noisier, (car horns and shouting till the early hours). Food expensive, $30 for buffet breakfast, $8 for 3 items. Our Virgin cabin crew arrived about 15 minutes after us! We chose it for location and because I had hilton points and vouchers to use! Day 2. Fri 29th Mar We'd bought the Go Card Explorer, which gave us 3 options on the one day! So we did a tram ride to FW, (popped into Ghirardelli) then took a bus to the Presidio for the Walt Disney Museum. Very interesting if you like Disney, but alot to take in. We then walked back to FW through the nature reserve and along the sea front, very nice. Our third option for the Go Explorer card was to take a Red and White boat trip out to the bridge. Once back at FW we queued for nearly an hour for a cable car(?)/trolley bus back to Powell, wow, it was better than many a theme park rollercoaster! Day 3. Sat 30 Mar. Breakfast at Buena Vista Cafe whilst waiting for our Dylans Tour. It's the place to go for Irish Coffee apparently! Very popular place and a very nice cooked breakfast, and unlimited coffee! Used lyft from the hotel - $8.65. . Definitely the highlight of San F, great to see parts of the city you wouldn't normally get to see, and learn some of its history Finished in Sausilito rather than doing the afternoon tour to Muir woods. Took a 'normal ferry' back, queue for that was a bit chaotic as you didn't really know which ferry you were queuing for! We ended up going via Tiberon, which did mean we had another close up of Alcatraz before finally getting back to FW! We walked around the wharf and Pier 39, but it was absolutely mobbed so not much fun. We liked the Musee Mecanique though Ate at Boudins which was very good, sour dough and chowder! Then another lyft back from there to the hotel - $10.04 All in all 2 full days in the city, but looking forward to start our trip south, Next stop Santa Cruz and the Henry Cowell Redwoods! Looking forward to rest of your reports How did you find the flight? Was it the virgin Dreamliner? How comfortable were the seats if you flew economy? Edited at 05:08 PM. |
