101 palpitations Day 11 Monterey or Bust

http://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=452435

I didn't want to get up this morning because the bed is sooooo comfy.

According to THE PLAN we have a busy day ahead of us so I dragged myself out of it at 7.30

I'm glad we're not going home today because the bags under my eyes would definately exceed the luggage allowance.

Anyway all washed and dressed we set off for The Seabright Cafe which has been ranked as one of the best in Santa Cruz for breakfast.

Again this is within walking distance which is a good thing because parking is something of a premium in Santa Cruz.

The weather is weird one minute it is boiling next minute freezing.

This morning the sky is greyer than Leeds City Centre on pension day.

The Seabright Cafe was packed full.

This is a good sign, Wednesday morning 8.00 a.m. it must be half decent.

The person in charge who I presume to be Linda took our names and sent us into a waiting area outside.

It looked like a 1970's bus shelter.

You could help yourself to coffee but had to inform the waitress so that it could be added to your bill.

I think not.

There were people coming and going all the time.

Obviously locals.

All kissy kissy with one another.

The women all looked the same.

Tree huggers.

Long grey hair parted in the middle, no make up, flat sandals.

Hairy Legs!

In fact I thought one of them had furry moon boots on her legs were that bad.

Then she lifted her arm up.

Yee Gods that's where Tina Turners been hiding for the past two years.

I started humming Nut Bush City but nobody got it. ('m gonna have to change my squad).

Eventually we were summoned for breakfast.

The interior was very 1970's.

Our table was wedged between a huge plastic cheese plant and a photograph of Arnold Shwartzenegger.

Basically wedged between two plants then.

We ordered the breakfast.

Everything was served with fried potatoes and toast.

The breakfast was ok but not good enough to warrant the rave reviews it gets on Expedia.

The potatoes were the red skinned variety cubed and fried with green bits in.

Bloody hell I hope we aren't eating that albondigas stuff again.

We came away fed and watered but decided not to go back.

Its a shame because Lindas is on THE PLAN another twice.

That means at some point we need to find a supermarket.

Never mind we set off for Monterey.

No problem Bing took us straight there.

We looked around the fishing and docking area first

We wandered down the pier watched the fishermen and the seals.

Apparently they keep the little dinghies purely for the seals.

They don't half fight for them though.

Some of the dinghies are empty they all seem to fight for the same dinghy.

The sea fret went and the sun was getting hotter so we stopped for a drink.

It was a neat little place called The Griddle In the Middle.

I didn't want anything to eat because those fried potatoes were nagging in my stomach.

In fact I felt like I had eaten something akin to a radish vindaloo.

There was a little outside area so we were happy to sit there and people watch.

Now the Monterey women are a totally different breed to the Santa Cruz women.

Very chic.

Jewellery with more carats than Bugs Bunny.

Regulation scarf hiding the craggy neck

Topped off with a Prada bag that houses a little dog.

There was a Monterey lady on the next table to us.

Sat there supping a large glass of Chardonnay at 10.30am.

She was feeding her cute little dog some kind of seafood salad.

All the time she's doing this she's talking to somebody called Renaay on the mobile.

I just had to tune in.

I knew Christine was doing the same cos she was quiet for once.

She had one of those deep raspy voices like Cammillas.

"Ah don't mind listening to your problems Renaay. After all I lead a very stressful life myself".

Course yer do love it must be awful sat looking out to sea with a mug of Chardonnay every morning, I don't know how you cope.

Raspy voice, " I don't know how Harv can do that to you it's only a coupla maxed out cards".

I'm guessing Harv is Rennays husband .

"He can't cancel house cleaning , no woman should be kept in chains".

Me and Christine were like two spectators at Wimbledon looking at her then one another.

She started whining ,"Paris and I are missing you and Toki ".

In a nutshell, Paris is the dog and Renaay's dog is Toki.

Harvs sacked the cleaner cos Renaay's spent up on the plastic.

Renaay can't meet up because she has had to stay in and clean her own mess up. Awwww shame.

The raspy voice started again.

"Renaay we all have to economise, I too am economising".

At that point she shoved a big lump of lobster into Paris's gob.

Its a pity she economised on the regulation neck scarf because to be honest the last time I saw a neck like hers was on a carving dish at Christmas.

Reluctantly we moved on to the next pier which was where all the shops cafes and touristy things were.

I wanted to stay and find out more about Harv and Renaay:pop:

Sadly there is only so much time I could make a glass of coke and a bottle of Gaviscon last.

The next pier was very lively.

Every restaurant had a resident thruster in occupation.

You would walk past and a little pot of clam chowder would be thrust upon you.

I didn't want to try it. It looked all white and paste like.

Christine and Al had some and declared it to be really tasty.

I'm sorry but I didn't fight my way to the top of the food chain to eat gloop like that.

There were more seals this one was a right old poser

Next thing a young pretender tried to muscle in on his act and they had a right old scrap.

We had a wander down Cannery Row. There are photos of John Steinbeck everywhere.

I'm a tad dissappointed I thought Monterey had a huge influence on John's life.

He wasn't even born here and as far as I can tell only about four of his books were influenced by his stay here.

Still I enjoyed the Cannery Row and I'm happy I've been there.

We collected the car and followed the sign for the scenic drive.

To do the scenic drive it cost nine dollars and to be fair the coast line was stunning well worth the money.

I think it was about 17 miles long.

The end of the drive brings you out onto the Pebble Beach Golf Resort.

Wow its posh.

There are signs all over saying if you step on the greens you will go to jail.

These notices really melt my conkers.

Why charge us numpties 9 dollars ?

Basically they want our money but don't really want us there.

Dumb and Dumber spent ages in the pro shop and came out with

... A PENCIL! ...

We then stood gazing at the first tee for about half an hour.

We were supposed to be walking on to the next tee.

Ah don't think so.

It was getting cold so me and Christine went back to the car.

I left Dumb with strict instructions not to venture on to the greens.

Poor little rooster legs is far too old to spend the rest of his days in San Quentin as a big hairy biker's bitch.

I think they spent the rest of their time fantasising that they had won the American open there's about 100 pictures on the camera.

Finally they returned.

Next on the list was Carmel but we had spent so much time at Pebble Beach we just drove through it.

It looked good and its a shame we couldn't spend more time there.

We made our way back, we were hungry plus we needed shopping.

We stopped at a huge outlet.

There weren't any restaurants.

We found a Pizza Hut in Target so we ate there.

I've never eaten in Pizza Hut and I liked it.

I had a chicken pasta thing, I ate that and a pizza.

The others only had a pizza.

I've come to the conclusion that my body and my fat are really good mates so why try to part them?

We did a quick shop and headed home.

We spent the evening on the Board walk in Santa Cruz.

This place is great its all 1960's.

Sadly there season ended on Labor day so some of it is closed.

I imagine in season this place is really rockin.

We are going to Alcatraz tomorrow so need an early night we were in bed by 11.00 pm early for us.

I'd forgotten I had finished reading your trippies, now I'm sat here chuckling away when I should be on my way to town.
Love your descriptions, don't think I could have left Renaay and turkey neck so soon
