Our first family road trip- Day 1, Part 1
Travel day
Day 1 (Part 1)-San Francisco Friday 27th August 2010 As we only had 2 full days to see San Francisco I had decided that we must fit in as much as possible and was praying that the time difference would have us up and about early. I awoke at 4.45am and huffed and chuffed around the room until everyone else was awake too. Now this plan backfired a little as everyone was now hungry and looking to me to provide breakfast options. We left the hotel at just gone 7am and wondered for 10 minutes down towards the Ferry Building to check where we would be meeting out tour operator in a few hours. Today we had booked a 5 hour city tour with San Francisco Comprehensive Shuttle Tours at a cost of $230 ($65 adults, $50 children). We needed to be back for the tour at 10.45 so we decided to take a walk along the front to Fisherman’s Wharf in order to find food. This was a pleasant 30 minute stroll although a little chilly and there was nowhere open so early. We stopped for breakfast at the Boudin Bakery cafe at Pier 39 shortly after it opened at 8.15. Bry, Molly and I ordered the traditional breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, potato wedges, toast and jam. Sam ordered toast! We each had on orange juice and coffee for the adults and hot chocolates for the kids (which they still maintain to this day is the best chocolate they have ever had). The bill came to $57 and is self-service cafe style so no tip needed. Sadly no-one would let me take food pictures on this trip but the food was very tasty for what looked like a truckers cafe! I have vowed that I will take food pictures on the upcoming trip. After breakfast we wandered around Pier 39 although everything still shut or just opening up. We browsed the windows and got our bearings for where we want to come back to after the tour. We knew we would only have a couple of hours between the tour and our Alcatraz night tour in order to shop for souvenirs. There were a few Sea Lions at the end of the Pier although not as many as I had thought there would be. I read a few trip reports before we went and knew that the numbers were lower than they had been. We made our way back to the Ferry Building and found the tour operator for our tour. We were informed that we were making the ferry crossing first to Sausilito and the coach would collect us from there later. Once all of our party were gathered we were shown to the ferry at the back of the building and began the very windy crossing! Then as if by magic the clouds disappeared as we reached Sausilito on the other side of the Bay. We were advised we had just under an hour here to get some lunch as it was now midday. Now, if (or probably when) we go back to the west coast we all said we would return to explore more of this little town. It was stunning albeit expensive, 4 sandwiches and drinks cost us nearly $60 for lunch. We browsed some of the shops and then had to go and meet the coach. We could have definitely spent a day here alone. If you do the morning tour you do SF on the coach and it drops you then in Sausilito for lunch but you get given your ferry ticket and can then have more time here and take a later ferry back across the bay. We boarded the coach and was given a bottle of water each and introduced to our tour guide for the afternoon (Victoria I think she was called). Continued in part 2...

It is really cold in San Francisco isn't it? I think you get 4 seasons in a day! Enjoying your report.
