Trying to decide whether to pre pay for fuel or take one of the other options. Pre pay would be easier, but has anybody used Hertz just recently who knows if this a good deal or not. Is the price they charge a lot higher than the pump on the roads?

We usually go for the pre-pay fuel option. Less stress and nothing to add on if for any reason we have to go to the desk (we usually just go right out to garage).

Apart from the obvious fact that the fuel itself will be more expensive at the pumps you are paying more for the fuel that is left in the tank when you return it. The car rental companies make a fortune on the pre-pay option!
Granted depending on the rate they offer me I may take it, far less stress!
We just prepay now as there is virtually no difference in the price compared to filling at the pumps. Just make sure there is only a small amount left in the tank for the return to the airport. I wouldn't run on fumes but if you want to just put a couple of dollars worth of gas in they won't bat an eyelid at the gas station.
hi
We arrived last night and got our car from Hertz( 1st time and may be the last- but thats another story!) and the fuel cost prepaid was $3.09 which would appear to be very similar to what is is on the forecourt

Hi bear neccess
It might be me being a bit of a numpty but what do you mean "we pay more for the fuel that is left in the tank"? If i'm understanding you right, you mean because the person who rented before may have dropped car off with 1/2, 1/4 tank remaining, the company then make on the next person (be it me) because I then rent that car out & pay for a full tank when the company only had to part fill it?
I only ask because I posted a similar thread a few days ago about Hertz pre-pay fuel option, hence my reason for looking at this thread. Was going to opt for the pre-pay option but want to make sure that it is cost effective for me to do it this way

AJ
Just checked the fuel prices and the lowest are $2.98. So at 11 cents a gallon more you would be paying approximately just over $1.60 more for a full tank of fuel in the average intermediate car if you prepaid. I think I would be prepared to pay that extra pound to have less hassle at the end of our holiday. Thanks for the replies.

Pretty much. You pay and start the holiday with a full tank. You use it all and refill it again (to the top). You then return the car to the garage and it has a half a tank left, youve paid for two tanks but only used 1 and a half.
If you do not go for the option, you have to bring it back full, this will always be the cheaper option because you use all the fuel you pay for.
It will never be "cost effective" to prepay for the fuel, you will always end up paying more. The question is, is it "worth" the additional money? Well that just depends on the price the quote me on the day!
