Mickeyetta’s Californian Adventure – Day 10, 30 Sept 2012. Bakersfield to Las Vegas.
Mickeyetta’s Californian Adventure – Day 10, 30 Sept 2012. Bakersfield to Las Vegas.
Today we have the longest drive of the holiday ahead of us! But we decide to have another lie in and to make the most of the sooper bathroom. After last nights room service neither of us are hungry and so breakfast was just a tea and coffee from “Farmacy” again. We then take a stroll round the block to get some photos of the hotel from the outside and of the Fox Theater one block behind. We are all checked out and on the road at half ten… first stop fuel. For the first time ever Si finds a friendly guy in a petrol station who when realizing we are English spends a good 10mins explaining to Si exactly how the pump and paying system works… that’s a first for 6 trips to the USA now! And so fuelled up we start the boring drive to Las Vegas… its flat its dusty and its boringly straight in places! We stop in Barstow at noon for a very late Denny’s Breakfast, right on route 66! I have my very predictable usual of an All American slam with toasted muffin. Si goes for the French toast slam. With drinks it comes to $30 inc tip. And so we crack on from Barstow, passing everyone’s favorite road name and the world’s biggest (broken) thermometer! Soon we are across the Nevada boarder and the Casino’s start appearing, and soon after that we are driving down the strip trying to find our next hotel…. The Cosmopolitan. We valet park, and give the cases to bell services, before heading to check-in. We have booked a wraparound terrace suite, but Si still manages to upgrade the room so that we have a view of the Bellagio fountains. This costs us $100 a night…. And we are here for five nights! I am NOT amused! So with me being a little “narked” we head off through the casino to the other tower to find our room all the way up on the 66th floor! The elevator goes real fast and make our ears pop…. Even after five days we didn’t get used to that! Our room was great. Plenty of room to spread out in our big bathroom, or our king sized bedroom, or our living room, and although we had a kitchen it didn’t come with any crockery… Though we could rent them for a fee! Welcome to Vegas! Now I’m not sure if it was the hard upgrade sell at check in or being so high up, but what I felt at this time I can only describe as the “Vegas freak out”. To say I was overwhelmed is understating it…. And to be honest at this point I was thinking I was going to hate Vegas and hate the next five days! So to try and get away from it all we fired up the Internet, and sent messages to Roonlou to find out where they were. A few minutes later we were back out again down to the valet and on the road to McCarran International to go and find our chums…. Hopefully they could ease our Las Vegas worries! We park in the short stay car park and whilst heading into the terminal exchange texts with Roonlou to try and hunt each other down! It was messy and many texts were exchanged, but we find them in the end and help them with their luggage back to the car and back to the Cosmopolitan. Along the way we chat about our adventures in California and Texas so far and what we plan to do for the next few days. Back at the Cosmopolitan we Valet Park again, and we leave Roonlou to check-in and get themselves sorted. Meanwhile we go back up to the nose bleed (66th) floor and fully unpack our cases for the next 5nights. Here in followed some communication difficulties… that involved Roonlou knocking on the door, but getting no answer (honestly we were on the balcony and the suite is so big we didn’t hear them!), and some strange phone calls where we couldn’t hear each other because of the stupidly over complicated phone system. Anyhow finally after our troubles we locate our chums and head out to brave the strip! We were all peckish but no one was really hungry-hungry. So I suggest Earl of Sandwich (A personal favorite of mine), to which everyone agrees. So Roonlou direct us over the road to Planet Hollywood. Si and I split a Hawaiian BBQ sandwich and an All American sandwich, with a Corona and a lemonade to drink. Total cost $22. We eat our tasty morsels with loads of hooting and hollering going on around us for a football game that none of us could understand! I believe Lou had a beer! Suitably satisfied our chums take us out onto the gambling floor and try to teach us the finer art of the poker machines. I think we loose $10, but Si gets a free beer for this, so its not too bad! By now both Si and I are really flagging… to be honest I don’t know how Roonlou were still awake considering they had done just as much travelling as us but were also dealing with two hours time difference. So at about 10pm we all got back to the Cosmo and we bid our chums goodnight, arranged to meet at 9:30 for breakfast, and let them carry on with their gambling. As soon as my head hit the pillow I passed out…. Good Night Las Vegas! Total miles for the day – 282.
