Pinning for the Fjords - Day 1 Boarding the Magic

Saturday 6th June finally dawned and after a gorgeous continental breakfast in the hotel we had another walk around central Copenhagen. We stopped in the Lego store on the main street and picked up a Lego Iron Man magnet. We have recently started watching the Marvel cinematic universe movies and had got as far as Capitan America just before we flew away, so Iron Man seemed like a good mascot for this trip.

After the shops we wandered through the Royal Palace and bumped into a Segway tour wandering around Copenhagen, from all the Pedestrianised areas in central Copenhagen we thought that this might be an option for the following Saturday when we had a full day of sightseeing planned.

We went past the Tivoli gardens and I had been trying to work out if you can just wander in but seeing the gates it was obvious that entry is paid, we later found out that it is cheep and we did go a week later, but I am getting ahead of myself. By this time it was getting towards 11:30 and we had arranged a late checkout but still needed to be heading back to the hotel. We did stop in the Town square to watch the Salvation army release balloons but as we don't speak Danish was not sure why...

Town Square, Balloons for Salvation Army

Returning the hotel it was midday, we grabbed our bags and checked out and got the hotel to call us a Cab. All taxis in Copenhagen take credit cards as payment, as we had confirmed, so we didn't need any cash and the taxi headed out from the Central area to Oceankaj terminal 1 where the Magic was waiting.

During the journey we followed the train lines for a while but a word of warning it was a long way from the station till we got to the terminal, we did see some people walking which seemed like a bad idea.

Arriving at the Terminal we paid the cab, passed our bags to the Disney Cruise staff and watched them on a conveyor belt disappear in to the terminal building, they had the disney tags so next time we see them will be at our room. We then had to walk around to the other end of the terminal building and entered. We did have a 12:30 check-in but looking at the number of people here so did almost everyone else. We went through security and got in the queue for Silver and Gold castaway club members which was much longer than the first timers queue but did also have significantly more check in points to use. We did move consistently got our first Navigator and got to the check in point about 20 mins after we had arrived at port. Photo taken and our keys to the World cards issued and we got our Silver lanyards. As our board group (12) had been called, they were on 19 by this time we were able to go straight to the boarding area, we skipped the photos and were soon on the gangway.

Boarding in Copenhagen is missing something as we walked on to the Floor 1 Forward tender point rather than the nice doors in the atrium, this also means that we didn't have the full announcement and round of applause as we boarded the ship. Also as the queues for lifts was a bit crazy we walked up to the 6th Floor and headed for our room as the staterooms had been opened.

We dropped our bags, met our attendant the delightful Annette from Montego Bay, Jamaica, checked our port adventures tickets that had been waiting in our Fish and headed up to Cabanas for some lunch. Before heading out I had had a strange desire for Corn Dogs and there at the first station we got to were little corn dog bites almost as it was planned just for me. (We never saw them again in the week).

During lunch I signed up for the beer glass, where you get a larger serving of beer each time you use it but for the same price as a smaller pour but we decided against the water package.

After lunch we popped down to Lumeire's just to confirm our Palo booking and to confirm that they had all of Celia's dietary requirements. We also were trying to get our bearings around the ship, having only been on the Fantasy before the main feeling was similar to going to Disneyland for the first time after having a few trips to the Magic Kingdom in WDW, it was obviously a bit smaller but it looked similar but not quite the same.

One of the main places we wanted to visit was the Oceaneer club as I had heard about the Marvel area but without kids it is not the easiest place to visit, but the first day does have Open house so that was the time for us to visit.

We also popped into Andys room

We had also seen that before the Life boat drill there was a Walking ship tour so we headed to Preludes for that, but once the Cast Members (Bryan and Katie) arrived and explained it was just a orientation walk, well we already worked out where most of the places we needed were on the ship we decided to head back to our room and saw our bags and used the time before the drill to unpack.

The drill is a mandatory requirement and time we had a desk based location (P) which was just below our stateroom, which was better than on the Fantasy were we were in the Tube so it did feel like we would be first on a boat if it was needed.

After the drill we headed up to desk 10 for Adventures Away which was the sailaway party that had ended before the ship moved.

We wandered around deck 10 as the ship sailed out then we headed back down to our room as the wind was a bit fresh at that point. We freshen up and went to the Walt Disney theatre for All Aboard, that days show which is very similar to the first day show we had seen on the Fantasy.

After the show we had a wander around the shops and looked to see if the onboard sales desk was open (it wasn't). First nights meal was in Carioca's and we were seated at Table 38, right at the back of the room we were the first to arrive so being the gent I let sit facing out into the resturant and I had a view of a wall with 2 doors painted on, one for Donald and one for Panchito. We were joined by our table mates for this cruise. Sam and Aaron from Winter Haven Florida, Lillian and Alex from LA. Last to join us was Steph as her partner was not feeling well and she had done 25 cruises but had not been to Carioca's before.

Dinner was interesting, our server Valentin from Bulgaria couldn't remember our names gave the wrong plates to the wrong people but the final straw was Celia's dessert as a Creme Brulee was presented which immediately raised flags as Lactose is one of the main issues Celia has to deal with. So we questioned the list of dietary issues Celia was listed as having and lactose was missing. A plate of fruit was offered as a replacement but declined as Celia does not have much of a sweet tooth so only has dessert when it has some planning.

Our dinner had also gone on a long long time and it was well after 10:30 pm by the time we left Carioca's so feeling shattered we headed back to our room, saw our Towel ray and went to sleep for the night.

Sounds a very different experience but hopefully a pleasant one (apart from the dessert mix-up!)
