Adventures In Public Transport - Days 3 - San Francisco
Day 3 - San Francisco
Woke feeling like I’d had a really good sleep, looked at the clock and it’s 12.45am After lying awake for a bit I eventually dropped back off and woke back up at 4.30am. Tried to go back to sleep but by 5am we were all awake so gave up and decided to get ready for the day. We decided as we were awake so early it would be a good morning to try the Hollywood Cafe as we knew the queue can build here. It was opposite our hotel so we literally just had to cross the street. As we were there for 7am opening we were seated straight away (by 7.15am all the table had gone). Food was delicious and they filled coffee quicker that we could drink it, which made my husbands day. We had the two eggs anyway one with bacon, one with ham steak It came with hash brown and sourdough toast. DS had a kids version of this. Total came to $47 including tip. We were booked on the 9.10am Alcatraz Tour but as we still had a bit of time we walked the slightly longer way around past Boudin’s and Pier 39. It was all very quiet at this time of day, totally different to the massive afternoon crowds. We slowly made our way along the sea front taking in the views and doing what you do when you have an 11 year old, catch a few pokemon. When we arrived at the Alcatraz landing they were still loading the 8.45am boat so we had a look around some of the models and information they have on display. It wasn’t long before they we calling our 9.10am tour to line up and board. We chose a spot on the middle deck at the front of the ship. The crossing was quick and breezy. DS was excited to get his first look at the golden gate bridge. After docking we had a brief introductory talk from a volunteer ranger before heading up the hill to the main prison and collecting the audio tour. I remembered the tour being good from our last visit back in 2001. It was nice to do it again as we had forgotten some of the stuff and new bits have been added since. We completed the tour around 11am and took some time to wander around some of the outside parts of the island and a visit to the shop, eventually catching the 12pm ferry back over to the mainland. The sun was out in full by now and there were loads of sailing ships in the bay and even some rowers. Edited at 04:40 PM. |

Next we walked back to Pier 39, which was now packed in complete contrast to this morning. We had a wander around a few shops and went to see the sea lions. DS loved these.
For lunch we walked over to Boudin Bakery, the main one rather than the small one on the Pier. It was super busy here but the queue move really quickly and they were quick getting food out. DS went for a half grill cheese and half salad. Hubby and myself shared between us a half soup, half salad. With drinks it came it at $31. By now it was nearly 3pm and we were flagging a bit. We decided to pop back to the hotel and rest for a little bit before heading back out a 4pm to the Musee Mecanique. This small museum is only on Pier 41 and is full of all sorts of vintage and retro games. Most games are just a quarter and they have change machines where you can change from a $1 upwards into quarters. We spent about 45min in here trying out a different ones. After this we popped into Walgreens and pick up a few snacks & drinks for later as we weren't very hungry. We end up crashing around 8pm again! |

Another great day. How far in advance do you have to book tickets for Alcatraz?

Alcatraz - so atmospheric and the tour gives you a real insight as to how it was run. Your son looks like he's enjoying that breakfast by the way. Bring on Day 4.
