We were up early today and went to the dining room for breakfast. I had pancakes and bacon with maple syrup they were really nice. DW had sausage egg and toast the sausage was cold so they took that off the bill which worked out around $15 including coffee.
We set off the 10 miles to our first hike to Dark Hollow Falls was classed a moderate walk but was pretty steep on the way back but the falls were lovely.

Once we had finished that walk we drove along the Skyline stopping off at more of the viewpoints until we got to mile marker 80 or so and did another walk to Blackrock Summit.

We had our lunch up there enjoying the view while we ate.

Another of our lunch view

We stopped of at another few view points on the way and DW climbed to the top of this rock!

Our last walk of the day was another climb up Hawksbill Gap this was quite a hike up but another brilliant view. Glad it was downhill on way back though . All the walk we did today were around a couple of miles each no great long ones but all had a bit of a hike to get to the top.

By the time we got back to Skyland we were pretty hungry so went to the tap room and shared a pound of boneless wings in bbq sauce, fries and coleslaw there was loads. The boneless wings were very good cost tonight was around $30 including a beer and lemonade and was much nicer than last night which cost double. Headed back to our room and sorted out our stuff for setting off on the next part of our trip along the Skyline and onto the Blueridge Parkway to Roanoke.

We got up around 6.30am after a not very good sleep and set off to the Skyline drive around 7.30.
We got to Dicky Ridge Visitor centre a bit before it opened so decided to do the Fox Hollow Trail across the road which was listed as an easy trail taking around an hour.

Along the trail is an old family cemetery belonging to the Fox family there were a few headstones day I g back to early 1800’s.

By the time we got round the trail the visitor centre was open so went in for a look. Watched a film on the Shenandoah National Park and bought a few stickers and things then headed on along the drive.

Stopped off at a few stop offs to take a look at the views which were amazing but would have been even more amazing had there not been a slight haze.

Carried on until we reached another trail called the Limberlost Trail. By the time we had done this one we could go and check in to our room at the Skyland Resort belonging to the National Park.

Took these photos of room just now so excuse mess but they are pretty good as far as National Park rooms go! We booked premium ones that have tv and air conditioning in them.

After eventually managing to lock our door the lock seemed to be a bit dodgy or maybe it was us as it’s been fine since we headed to the dining room for dinner.
I had meatloaf again wasn’t as nice as I had in Washington and DW had turkey dinner which she wasn’t that keen on.

We had pink lemonades with dinner managed a photo of one of those but not the dinner. Cost was $60 including tip.

After dinner we headed back to our room to watch the sunset from our outside seating area. After the sunset we got our stuff ready for tomorrow going on a few little hikes along with a drive further down the Skyline Drive. It had been a great day but still looking out for bears not seen any yet!

Not much in way of photos today got metro back to the bus station to catch silver express to airport is pretty easy journey took around 45 mins less time than a cab would have taken.
Picked up our car from Dollar a Ford Escape we managed to choose our own car.
Stopped at a town on the way for a coffee found the people very friendly. Stopped at a place called the Apple House at Front Royal as their apple donuts were supposed to be amazing they were not!
Then headed to Skyline Caverns to do the tour there which was pretty interesting .Then headed to our motel which was very basic but clean nothing like our hotel in Washington.
Had food at a place called Moms Country Kitchen no photos of the food but it was cheap $7 for pork chops mash and green beans was a a good as an expensive restaurant.
Back to motel and got ready for Shenandoah the next day!

Up early today as we have a tour booked at The Capitol Building decided to go to Whole Foods for some breakfast before catching the Metro. Sat chatting to an old guy who sat beside us he was a pretty interesting old fella.
Decided we better go for the metro NOT as it is labour day it doesn’t open till 8am and we had to be there for 8.30 and it was a 45 min walk.
Managed to get a Lyft there for less than $10 so not too bad.

Got checked on for the tour and watched the pre tour video then went out to meet our tour guide was quite a big group but we were given headphones so we could hear everything.

In total we went into a couple of rooms one being the room under the dome which was pretty cool. Loads of statues around the building each State got to have 2 statues on display.

This statue was of Rosa Parks who sat on the white section of a bus during segregation.

Colorado has one of the astronauts from Apollo 13 he was played by Kevin Bacon in the film.

The ceiling inside the domes room was really nice it was huge and shows George Washington being taken to the heavens. There is a room called the crypt which was supposed to be for him and his wife when he died but he died before it was finished his family were asked if they could move their bodies there but they declined saying he had been buried at Mount Vernon where he asked to be in his will.

After our visit here we went to the museums Of The American Indian and then on to the African American Museum these were really interesting but didn’t really get much photos.

Did manage to get this one of Chuck Berry’s Cadillac though.

And one of Michael Jackson’s outfits.

Dinner tonight was at Founding Farmers where I had Meatloaf again which was nice but not as nice as last nights.

DW had same as last night as well we are both boring with our food choices lol! Made our way back to hotel to pack and get ready for early start tomorrow picking up hire car from airport and heading to Front Royal before going to Shenandoah.

After waking up at 1.30 I managed to get back to sleep until 5am which is pretty good for me DW was still asleep so I managed to finish off trip report for yesterday. Got showered DW got up so we got ready to go out and we’re out the door by 6.30am.
The plan was to go and see the White House.

Which we did there was no one there but us security and a few homeless people which there seems to be a lot of round that area although a few of them seem to live on tents set up around the area.

After waving to Donald we set off to find Lincoln’s Waffle Shop. Found this place on the internet and had great reviews and was the kind of place not so many tourist would go to.

Didn’t take any photos but the food was great I had waffle and bacon which was the nicest waffles I ever had. DW had toast with sausage egg and cheese in a sandwich which was very nice as well .

Next door to the waffle shop was this building which was the house Lincoln died in after he was shot.

After this we went to Metro Centre and got the metro to Arlington and took the tour round the cemetery I don’t realise the size of the place until I take this tour. Walking round you wouldn’t get round it all especially in the heat and humidity we have had today.

The place is beautiful in its own way.

Watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier I don’t know how they can be on those uniforms in the heat but it was a lovely ceremony.

Next stop the Pentagon not supposed to take photos but sneaked this one on the way to the 9/11 memorial which is a lovely tribute to those killed when the plane struck the Pentagon.

We saw Pandas next went to the zoo! This is another great place which is free to visit being Labour day weekend was very busy. I love the idea that anyone can go here families that maybe couldn’t afford a day to the zoo can go and enjoy a day out for free.

Next stop the Natural History museum.

Also a visit to the American History Museum

After this we walked over half an hour to go to Teds Bulletin Diner on 14th st a long walk with sore feet but well worth it the meatloaf was fantastic! DW had grilled cheese and tomato soup which she enjoyed.
We couldn’t walk any more so got a Lyft back to our hotel.
We walked 22.5 kilometres today almost 30000 steps!
So now back at hotel waiting for Fear the Walking Dead and getting ready to visit the Capitol Building tomorrow for our tour.

Sat waiting at Charles de Gaulle waiting to board our A380 to Washington so time to put 1st half of today on now.
Woke up at 3.15am after what seemed like an age trying to get to sleep think I managed an hour or at least it felt like it.
DW was already up and showered before I got up. Got sorted and over to T3 to check in on our Flybe flight it Paris.
When we got to gate for our now delayed flight it was changed so had to be escorted to the domestic departures for our gate change took off half an hour late.
I don’t like flying in propeller planes and I don’t much like sitting at the back and had both on the way to Paris

Arrived in Paris with still almost 4 hours until we fly. Had a wander round the shops which are all high end shops that we don’t really shop in and had a pastry from Paul’s. Another wander around and now we are sat at the gate waiting to board in 30 mins time fingers crossed no delays.
Quick picture of effiel tower in airport as only saw the real one from the air!

After a short delay on the tarmac due to technical problem we got away about 45 mind late than supposed to. Arrived at Dulles and was just under an hour through immigration some of that time was because of a girl in front of our line had problems with her entry and had to go-for a secondary check.
Once through we then had a missing bag which turned up after 10 mins along with some other peoples bags as a trolly of bags got missed!

Anyway after getting our bags we caught the Silverline bus to the first Metro Station then the Metro to Foggy bottom cost each would have been around $10 and took total of 45 mins so not bad at all . Then under 10 min walk to our hotel.

Staying at The State Plaza which is lovely not too big hotel with massive rooms we also have a kitchen with a kettle in it for anyone who likes a kettle in Thor room. Cost of this hotel was 260 for 3 nights is also within 5-7 min walk of the the Mall with the memorials.

By time we had got our room and dropped of our bags it was 7.30 and we had been up for near on 21 hours but went out to view the Washington Monument and go to the Lincoln Monument in the dark.

Washington Monument

Lincoln Monument. We also went to see the Korean War memorial and the Vietnam one before heading back to the hotel.

By the time we got back and sorted for tomorrow no unpacking as only here for 3 nights everything we needed we had packed into separate packing cubes for each part of trip it was after 9 and time for some sleep hopefully.
