Personally thought it was quite expensive for just 30 mins with the dolphins - from what i can remember lunch was nice and included in the
price. Bought pictures and video of the interaction with the dolphins,
again kind of steep but is a once in a lifetime opportunity - both must buys. Was only two of us on the trip resulting in us sharing the interaction with about 6 other people - this was the another downside of it. Would've preferred it a bit more intimate but i think you may be able to pay a little bit extra for more of a personal interaction -i may be wrong but if i was to do it again i would certainly check that out.
Am not a very confident swimmer, wasnt struck on the coral reef (not really a fish fan!) but loved the other river/pool they have. A nice relaxing break from the hustle and bustle of the theme parks.
We last visited in October 2010 for my 21st Birthday and we absolutely loved it.
Make sure you get there early, we were the 5th people to check in so we got our pick of the swim times, were the first at breakfast and we were settled and into the reef before most people had even got through check in and you really do want to make the aboslute most of every minute here
Also make sure you go to the ray pool at feeding time, ask the staff there lots of questions and they'll show you cool little tricks & quirks of the rays that you would never see up that close otherwise. The staff at DC really are amazing and will show you so much more if you give them the opportunity.
We had a dolphin swim at 11.30am which was perfect for us, we had our swim then went for some lunch and to relax in our cabana before heading back out to explore the rest of the park without having to watch the clock. Dolphin swims can also get postponed if you're caught in an afternoon storm so bear that in mind.
Go with an open mind, an empty belly & make the most of every second at this amazing place!
We went in Oct 2009 on a lovely sunny day, we opted for the dolphin swim and having got there early(8am), were given an early swim time of around 09 15-09 30 am. Whilst I was pleased of an early swim with the dolphins (so we weren't clock watching all day) having got our vests and snorkles, we didn't have time for our breakfast before hand. When we went for breakfast after the swim we found very little left and a poor selection.
There was no where we didn't explore and try out at Discovery Cove, the avery was full of birds that we were able to feed, one or two fell asleep on DH's shoulder. We fed the rays and snorkled in the fresh water pool for hours, the lazy river has no fish in but the water is warm and you can snorkle as there sime 'treasures' on the floor.
Lunch was lovely and more than enough food for with plenty of choice on our visit, I had the salmon which was lovely. I can also recommend the carrot cake ( I had 2 slices) Snacks were available from a little bar behind the dolphin swim area, free to help yourself, also available here were soft drinks and beer that were free. Unfortunatly on our visit the coffee machine was broken
Despite thinking we had a quiet day by the time we left at 4.30pm we were exhausted, but It's a fantastic experience that we will never forget. Photo's/cd/DVD packages of your experience and day in the park are available to buy at the end of the day, it does get busy at this time, so be aware that we felt this is a bit rushed to choose what package we wanted and which photo's to print off.
A fantastic experience, we've booked again for our next visit.
Discovery Cove isn't just a park, it's almost like a getaway retreat, as soon as you walk through the doors the lobby looks like an up class Spa, here you are signed into the park, given your own ID necklace with your photo on it and time for your dolphin swim.
When walking into the park you are asked to pose for a free photo from a park photographer, this I thought was a nice gesture!
Onto breakfast, all the meals throughout the day are free including drink at any time during your stay. The breakfast choice at the time was continental although I now hear that this has included Cooked now which is a great addition to the park.
Once breakfast was over we headed to get our life jackets and a locker, we had already secured a nice couple of beds near the pool and there was no need to rush to get one as there were plenty. We started off by taking a small swim in the lazy river to try out the snorkels which were handed out with the jackets. We'd both never done any snorkeling before so it took us some time to get used to but once we'd got used to it, it was brilliant!
There were two pools to swim in at the time, one without fish in and the other was fresh water with lots of fish in!
We bucked up the courage to go into the fresh water pool, the water was FREEZING but going in for a swim had to be done. It takes time to adjust to the coldness of the water while also trying to snorkel at the same time! There are lots of species of fish around including a giant Ray, this actually swam over my back while I was swimming, much to my partners shock (I had no idea!).
Our Dolphin swim was after our lunch which again was really nice, the Dolphin swim is done in groups and you sit in a briefing before hand and told about the dolphins from a DC staff member. Once this is over your in the water with a trainer and a Dolphin! Lots of information is given about the dolphins while the trainer lets you pet the dolphin and feed it also.
Your picture is taken first, kissing and then hugging the dolphin, it really is a great experience to be this close to an animal with such presence as a Dolphin! Then onto your swim, we were given two options, a shallow swim or a deep swim meaning we would have to tread water for a bit, not something we were both comfortable with so we went with shallow. It's the same distance as a deep one so don't be embarassed about choosing it, it's all the same!
The swim itself is brilliant, you have to hold onto the fin and glide along with it, an amazing experience I don't think I'll ever forget!
Last but no means least theres the Aviary, an area where you can feed birds of all species, this really wasn't expected, we didn't even know it existed until half way through the day, this is brilliant at getting close to some really nice birds while they sit on your hand and feed out of your pots!
At the end of the day theres the chance to collect your photos, they can be expensive and you can also buy a DVD package but we just went with some photos for keep sake.
It's a brilliant day out, one I'll never forget and never question 'Was it worth it?' as the answer will always be YES!
