another worry
has anyone travelled recently or about to travel and know if they are allowing you to keep your J2 wheelchair cushions for onboard the plane. I read that because they were gel filled there might be a problem. my son wouldn't be able to fly without sitting on his cushion (pressure sores). we arn't going until next year but it would be something we would need to think about
I am having all my panics in the one day I think |

if in doubt get a doctors letter but make sure you inform special needs for your airline

Hi Ali,
We,ve been wondering that as well Ali. Yvette has a bog standard NHS chair for her manual one but it has a foam mould. She cannot sit without it and to manage in a wheelchair without it would be impossible. We're going to Canada in Sept and taking my wheelchair (I have to use one occasionally) and I have a pressure cushion although it's just foam, so I'll let you know how I get on, Carol |

Ali we came back from Orlando last weekend and had no problems taking DS's whole seating system on the plane as we normally do, DS couldn't sit without it. (Not that we could have done anything else, the security scare hadn't kicked off when we travelled out.) It has foam pressure cushions and all kinds of postural support pads. Security gave it a very thorough going over at the airport including taking swabs to test for explosive residue, but there was never any question of it not being allowed on the plane. Just be prepared for maybe a bit longer getting through all the checks and the wheelchair passenger being pulled aside for a particularly thorough search of both them and the chair. This was a little upsetting for Ben, but they were very sympathetic this time and let me stay with him.
I was thinking of getting a doctor's letter about the chair for next time, but we had one for this trip to allow his medication and were never asked for it after it costing us £15 (more than £1 a word). |

As promised:
Took my wheelchair and foam pressure cushion to Canada from Heathrow and had no problems at all. Wheelchair was given a good search and was swabbed but I took my cushion on the plane (Air Canada) with no problems and actually didn't need to use it as the seats were very comfy and the leg room was very good as well. Taking my chair again on 3 Nov to MCO from LGW so will see how that goes. Carol |
