Slow shutter speed shots-HELP!
Any suggestions guys,
Im a keen photographer (and driver but thats not relevant here!) of Rally cars. however many of the professional shots im sent of my car are taken at very high shutter speeds resulting in a nice sharp picture of a car that could have been taken standing still. Now when I try to take my pics I prefer to use slow shutter speeds to give a sense of movement or action (blurry wheels, flying gravel etc) The problem I have is that I cant use slow shutter speeds in bright weather without overexposing the pic. My Fuji has a max F stop of F9 so am I being limited by the ability of the camera or are there any other tricks I could try, maybe a lens filter or something. Thanks for any tips. |

You could try adding motion blur effects in photoshop perhaps?

Or a ND (neutral density) filter should do the trick if your camera won't play ball with higher f-stop numbers.

But why do you feel that has to be the way? |

I can understand why Alvin wants to get the shot in camera and not fiddle, but I personally dont mind fiddling in photoshop if it means I improve on the photo I take or achieve the final result this way. Its just another tool to achieve the desired final image

Surely you guys must get a buzz when you manage to get a great shot. I cant see the point in just snapping a load of crap photos knowing you can turn them into something great on your PC (dont get me wrong, I have taken a LOT of crap photos) I think manipulating photographs on a pc is almost a completely seperate hobby from actual photography where its down to skill, patience and judgement (and a bit of luck)

I still say that an ND filter on the camera will solve your problem and let you get the shots you want.

Thinking about it, there is also the technique of panning with the subject, trying to achieve the same speed, to blur backgrounds.
Never tried it. Insanely difficult I imagine. |

In 35mm all the fiddling was done at the Lab... Your just doing it on a PC..Tolook at it in a simple way remember the good old days when one day you took a roll of ISO 100 to Boots and it came out completely differently to the next roll in many many ways because some one had not set the lamps correctly.. Those were the good old days.. Skin that was Green etc etc.
Airbrushing happened just as much then as did dodging and burning..Its odd that as soon as it goes digital its seen as cheating, probably because it is misused to often. Danny
