New digital camera help

DH and I are looking to get a new digital camera.

Originally we had looked at the Pentax Optio W10 but FIL has just bought one so we will hopefully be able to take this on holiday with us next year.

We quite like the look of the Canon A710 IS but are unsure if it is suitable for us? We will be using it for typical family snaps but are also inspired by this forum to dabble a little. We are also not sure if we need the Image Stabiliser - anybody have a camera with this?

Any opinions good or bad would be much appreciated. Like wise to any other recommendations for a fab camera under �200.

I havent used a camera with IS but I am about to get the new Pentax K10 with IS, I have seen the results of images using IS and its worthwhile in my book, I have lost a fair few images because the camera wasnt still and the picture was blurred.
