I have some threads over in the Photo Forum next to Guest Services about this issue.

In short, a bit tough right now unless you have £££ to spend or don't mind losing some quality.

Hi

DH has just bought a HDD camcorder. It saves the videos on the camcorder as MOV files which Pinnacle 10 recognises (where a normal computer won't normally recognise an MOV file). DH uses Pinnacle 10 and thinks this and Ulead are the best for the money.

P.S. Hope this makes more sense to you than it does to me!

I should have stated my advice was based on the AVCHD format (.mts files), and not the Quicktime HD (.mov files) format.

Do you know which you have? (IE Make.Model of camera?)

Why do you state that?
My digi camera creates MOV files and my computer plays them fine using Quicktime. You can get the Quicktime editor from apple fairly cheaply - its not fancy but will do a basic editing job, or I have edited them on other things, but my budget is basically non existant so I tend to use pretty basic software.

I use pinnacle studio DV, version 9 (not the latest version though). It is simple to use and the instructions are quite clear. There are a lot of effects included and you can add to these by buying 'bundles' online. You can add their music or create/download your own and use this too. I'm certainly no whizzkid in these things so I don't know if this software is too basic, but it does me and the results are super.

Perhaps it's this...

.MOV and .AVI are not actually formats, they are containers as such.

.MOV and be a Sorenson format, or perhaps a H264 format. H264/Mpeg 4 is usually used for HD video.
MP3 for Audio, or WAV pehaps...

Then dropped into the .MOV container.

You could have .MOV files that play on your PC, whilst others won't. Same for AVI. It depends on the formats (Codecs they are usually called) that have been installed.

I find it tough to get my head round all this business, as the discussion threads over in the clinic show.

Hope this helps!

DH's camcorder (JVC EVERIO) records with the file extension MOV. If you rename the file extension as an MPEG the computer will happily play it.

We use Pinnacle 9 and find it fine for us. We mix digital, analogue and stills for the final dvd.
