Calling a ambulance!

Hi, we are travelling to Orlando in 8 weeks time and our son has special needs. He suffers from a few medical conditions one of them being epilepsy. We have taken out separate travel insurance for him but we have been advised by his paedeatrician to find out what proceedure you go through when you need to call for an ambulance. Basically, we would like some advice from anyone who has ever needed to call an ambulance, we are staying in a villa on Highlands Reserve. Also we would like advice if he has a seizure in a Park, what is the best proceedure there. Any advice would be great, thanks x

we called 911 when we had a medical emerg told them we had insurance no problem
but on minor emergs called our insurance med emerg no and they gave us no and locations of doctors for a repeat precription that we needed
the parks have emerg medical centres they will deal the following is what insures ask you to follow

In case of emergency the number to call is 911 (the equivalent of our 999) which can be dialled on any telephone and is a free phone call.

In the event of a serious illness or accident which may lead to in-patient hospital treatment or curtailment of your holiday, advice should be obtained from the emergency medical service, details of which are shown on your insurance policy.

You will be charged for everything so retain all receipts for for doctor’s fees, medication even ambulances, so you can make a claim from your holiday insurance on your return home. An excess charge is normally payable on each claim

bit of topic but noticed the bit about your holiday insurance and also unsure what age your son is so might not apply.

but our son also has special medical needs and we were advised not to take out a seperate policy for him but to take out a family policy as if in the unfortunate event he has to be hospitalised over running our departure date then he alone would be covered whereby if it was a family policy we would be covered to stay with him .

Hi ..near you on the US27 junction with the cr535 is the nearest ambulance station and a short way further down is the Heart of Florida Emergency Centre so God forbid you need help at the villa they are both close by, when you go to the parks speak to the security and ask where the medical centre is in each park, go to them and check in with them so if you do need help then they can be prepared, also most all of the park staff cary radios even down to the cleaners so any staff can call 911

If you check out the park maps you will see the First Aid locations are marked, it is always advisble to know where they are before you need them. Staff there will be only too happy to assist you, but in an emergency any CM can make a 911 call for you. Our DS also has epilepsy and other special needs and we have used the First Aid services at both Disney and Universal parks many times and found them all very friendly and accommodating.

At your villa write down the villa address including zip code and phone number and keep it by the phone in case you do need to call an ambulance, it will be to hand to give them all the details of your location. Hoping you don't need that!

i know when i was in orlando & my mum in law collapsed we called 911, the ambulance asked us for her passport & if we had insurance. We did of course. Told us where they was taking her & my hubby went with her while i went to the hotel to get the copy of her insurance policy (she had her own policy seperate from our one) & they took good care of her. the police even summoned a taxi to take us. They contacted the insurance & she was covered. Even tho she had her policy our policy covered us for early termination of the holiday & fees inccurred etc we had a couple policy & she had a single policy. Unfortunately she died at sand lake hospital on our wedding day but the medical staff, paramedics & police were very supportive.

Hope you never have to use the medical services over there but if you do the treatment we recieved was a million times better than here. I was abit concerned that they wanted to know her insurance status before deciding where to take her & they took her passport but its just the cultural differnces i suppose, as they dont have the NHS equivanlent.

Hope this info is useful. & have fun on your holidays & i hope you wont need to use the medical services xx

We had to call 911 for our son back in 2003. We was never asked for our passport or insurance details. When he was taken to the emergency department we had to go to the payment office to show our insurance details . The hospital phoned our insurance company when they realised they need to air lift our son down to Miami for major surgery. But as someone has mentioned i would try to get a family policy just incase something does happen so someone can stay with your son.
