Park-friendly camera?

Help needed - I have full DSLR kit. I have digi-SLR hybrid with 12x zoom.

Is there anything a bit more compact/lighter but with a respectable zoom. DSLR is superb, but not the lightest beast.

Steve

I have the same as you - DSLR kit (tho not taken to WDW yet!), Kodak Bridge (with 12x optical). I wanted something compact to keep in my pocket and after research, I chose the Canon Ixus 800 IS.

Its only a modest zoom (3x I think) but it is excellent and ideal to whip out for snaps. The Image Stabiliser helped me get some decent night shots (although be careful with the ISO setting as it defaults to a quite high number in low light). You are better off knocking it back and having a tad longer exposure. Im really pleased with it. For a point and shoot ultra compact it has exceeded my expectations.

Try this I've just got one, it's tiny for what it does. (10 x optical zoom)
3 drawbacks though -
1) Poor Flash
2) Poor Battery Life
3) A max zoom you need a steady hand - with no lense to grip camera shake is a possibility.

I've bought for the same reason as you though - it fit's in my pocket.

Haven't properly tried it out yet, but we travel tomorrow.

How about a Fuji S5000 or the newer S5600, Not quite a pocket camera but will certainly go on the belt in a very small bag. the picture quality is absolutely superb, the zoom is powerful, the built in Flash is excellent and battery life is amazing, One set of rechargeables can last all day if you dont hammer the zoom too much. They even feel like a mini SLR and have some SLR features.
I have used my S5000 a few times in Florida and will probably be taking it again in June as I just dont fancy lugging my DSLR around all day.

A mate of mine uses one of these for bird photography - I assume it is the one that looks a lot like a DSLR?

I don't really want to buy yet another camera - I have probably a dozen including Kodak & Minolta 12x with Image Stabilising. Perhaps the Minolta is the lightweight answer - I could let the other half use that one.

Having said that, Im in favour of the superior pics of the DSLR. It would be fantastic to finally get to use my zoom at the 500mm lens in great light!
