anything should work for you. I've bought a few laptops from the US but from Best Buy or Fry's rather than Walmart. Only issue could be that the keyboards are slightly different to UK.

They were selling them last black friday for $300 in Walmart. They were basic but fine for the internet and basic functions.

We bought our villa laptop from Walmart. We've had it nearly 2 years now and it still works and looks good. It does get quite a lot of use from guests and I think it has stood up really well.

We bought an Avertec laptop from Walmarts about 6 years ago.
Still going great guns - Have had a few from Circuit City too but the Walmart one still handy - it was a 12 " screen and great.

Keyboard is more of an issue than just the missing pound sign. Other keys are in different places too (e.g. double-quotes, @ sign for emails, etc). If you're used to a UK keyboard, it can be a bit annoying.

I bought one 3/4 weeks ago from Walmart and it is perfect. When I got home, just went to Maplins and bought an A/c adapter. It was £275 altogether! Not bad!

You can set the keyboard to UK mode, but you need to know where the keys are (ie, ok if you are a touch typist). We have a girl in the office using a US keyboard set to UK mode and we've tipexed on the correct keys, not classy but it's working.

Just remember that even a $300 laptop is going to be just over your customs limit for goods to be bringing back into the UK and should be declared. I don't believe it's possible to 'split' a single item across 2 people (ie half of the laptop is mine and half is my wife's etc)
(Note: I'm quite happy to run the 'risk' of bringing in goods above the limit but I know, from similar threads on here, others are not) |
